The claim that the more than 70 million voters who followed Trump to the end will disappear from the map on January 20 with the inauguration of Biden and Harris shows a blindness to how much America has changed in recent generations .
What is even more worrying, however, is the survival of the ideology of those who elevated Trump. The puzzle is, how did this long third of the electorate occupy a vital area?
Numerous observers of the evolution of the American political soul have raised alarming voices in recent months. They marveled at the dangerous transformation of the United States’ political system into an unusual imitation of the fabric of other countries that had fallen into the webs of authoritarianism.
What’s worse is that they were swallowed up by the extreme ideologies that emerged in Europe in the 1930s. These drove countries with a long cultural tradition to transform themselves into totalitarian dictatorships. These voices fostered comparison of what happened using Trump’s whims, and turned into policies that resembled the practical programs of the Hitler regime since 1933.
In the society of the United States, at the beginning of the new century, the existence of broad sectors was discovered, feeling cornered, disappointed and isolated. They were not the traditional enclaves of racist minorities or remnants of European immigrants who had not fully fitted into the social and economic fabric.
Joaquín RoyYou were, so to speak, “thoroughbred Americans”. They saw that the American dream was gradually turning into a hurtful nightmare from which they could not wake up, despite faithfully following the testimony the system had given to their parents or grandparents.
Wages could not keep pace with the rising cost of living. Mortgages ate much of the income. When they lived in rural areas, they felt trapped by invisible borders. When they grew up with a basic education, access to college was limited by their income or the stratospheric costs of private institutions. An explanation had to be found for this apparent fraud.
In short, this was not the America they were promised. There was an urgent need to find the culprits for this fraud. In addition, it needed to determine the existence of new leaders who would not be so hateful and corrupt in Washington.
Suddenly they were orphans from a different direction, whose room was occupied by an “outsider”, Donald Trump. It arrived flawlessly, without the taint of traditional politics. It guaranteed the decontamination of the Washington swamp.
In a fairly educated nation, it would be quite an accomplishment to have followed the tunes of a flute player who had discovered the causes of their misfortune. When Hitler excited a cultivated people like the troubled interwar Germans, Trump fascinated the Americans with his simple solutions.
In Germany in the 1930s, urban decay was attributed to the alleged conquest of certain businesses by Jews. The solution began with breaking open shop windows, banning certain professions, and eventually imprisonment. The educated and disciplined German people swallowed the lie without question.
The regime exactly sold the supposed need to expand the territory by reputation of habitat. The simple solution was the annexation of Austria and then the bite into the ethnically German areas in Czechoslovakia. The people applauded, but did not seem satisfied: Poland had to be attacked and then respond to the Anglo-French protest with the violent blitzkrieg. The German people cheered as Hitler triumphantly marched around the Arc de Triomphe.
When Trump came to the throne, many Americans drawn to urban areas found that the manicured neighborhoods of the suburbs were contaminated by the invasion of racial minorities, which had previously been barely detected. They found it uncomfortable to share the room with black people and, what was even more hurtful, Hispanics, who also spoke an incomprehensible language. And most of them were accused of being drug traffickers.
The means of the White House was to close the border with the invaders with a wall. Trump also promised the Mexicans would pay for it themselves. He went on by dividing the families of those who had already entered, making it difficult for them to attend university and maximally delaying their citizenship.
The “lifelong Americans” were delighted. And the Republican Party was pleased with the renewal of its Senate positions. Arbitrary measures bordered on unconstitutionality. But the goal of “making America great again” became the central catchphrase.
In the Germany of Hitler’s rise, everything was subordinated to the end of the restoration or invention of the glory of the past, the chords of a Wagner opera. The lack of a questioning of the sovereignty of the Führer guaranteed the fulfillment of the script.
Belief of being the best nation in Europe justified the madness of the invasion of the Soviet Union without realizing that such an operation caused the fall of Napoleon. The National Socialist Party guaranteed order and the SS inherited the role of the brown shirts in order to tame the Wehrmacht, which swallowed the professional military who had not digested the defeat of 1918 well.
The disaster, which began in Stalingrad and culminated with the raising of the flag by Russian troops at the head of the Reichstag, was ravaged by Allied bombing that left Dresden and Hamburg in ruins, populated by millions of wandering soldiers as the ovens dying Camps were still smoking and a million German women of all ages were raped. The verdict was so powerful that it was the only way Germans learned their lesson and became a model for cooperation in Europe and the world.
However, it is unknown how the use of the same strategy could have ended if Trump’s rulebook had followed the same path. Now only the seventy million who voted for him to “make America great again” have remained silent. But the SS in the Republican Senate and the youngest infiltrators in the Supreme Court also remain unharmed. It is a giant denazification Task for Biden, without attempts in the Nuremberg style.
