AUGUSTA, Ga. – Tiger Woods left Augusta National with a real shot on a perfect Saturday morning to win another Masters and defend the green jacket he won 19 months earlier. He had just finished his second round, stopped by darkness the night before, with seven pars and a birdie to keep within reach of the leaders.
Between the end of his second lap and the start of his third – just over an hour – everything changed. His game was sour. His back stiffened. His dream of a 16th major title disappeared.
There was nothing he could do but watch the lead pack distance themselves other than guarantee Woods would put someone else’s green jacket on on Sunday afternoon.
This is how it happened:
No. 1: Par 4, 445 meters
Tiger Woods wobbles with no problem on the first hole after his first tee hits the fairway bunker in the third round. Navigated through an opening par. With the world’s top three players among the co-leaders, he has to go low to stay in the game.

No. 2: Par 5, 575 meters
Two tees, two fairway bunkers for Tiger Woods. And this one was expensive because it goes with a par from the second hole. That tells you about the par 5, which will produce many birdies – and even a few eagles – during the course of the day.

Different strategy for Tiger Woods on third. Went for the first time driver this week instead of ironing the tee. I still couldn’t turn it into a birdie because it was so mediocre. He’s going to have to convert some of these to stay in the mix because cream, DJ, JT etc won’t stand still when they get out of here.

Solid up and down after a bad break off the tee in the long par 3 fourth. His ball hit the front slope and launched over the back of the green. But the par gets a nice touch, for which he came in 4th. Want another par on the monstrous fifth.

A year later, Tiger appears to have found the extended fifth par 4 hole. Last year bogey-bogey-bogey-bogey. This year par-par-par.

If I was Tiger Woods or Rickie Fowler, I would avert my eyes every time Billy Horschel did. He has four three-putts in seven holes.
Tiger Woods has to work harder on the seventh than he’d like after his approaches slide just a little off the green. But he rolls in a different par.

Tiger Woods with a crushing bogey on an easy par 5 hole. If it doesn’t get hot anytime soon, those hopes of defending that league title will be almost impossible.

Tiger Woods, with par on the ninth, to get out in 1-over 37. He will make the short distance to the 10th tee, nine shots from the lead. If he doesn’t get silly at the second nine, he’ll just be a bystander at Sunday’s green jacket ceremony.

Time to pay close attention to Tiger’s condition. He slowly bends down to pick up his tee after his trip on the 10th. Obviously something is wrong.
Tiger’s second shot on the 10th was about 30 yards from the line – “Look at that ball of mud,” he says – but it hits a tree and jumps to the edge of the green. Hey how this lap goes and how stiff it seems, he’ll take what he can get.

Tiger Woods hits a perfect tee shot at the beautiful par 3-12 and then rolls his first birdie of the day. But here too, bend over very, very slowly to get the ball out of the hole.

After a striped ride, Tiger Woods was substituted on by another mud ball on the par 5-13 course. He could only laugh after his low screamer missed the green.

In the morning, when he was feeling better, Tiger Woods laid down on the 15th par 5 from a distance of 248 meters. This afternoon, even with a stiff back, he decided to do it from 244 meters. Result both times: birdie. Different strategies, same ending.

After 26 holes on Saturday, Tiger Woods’ day is over. And his third round wasn’t what he wanted – or needed. He is currently posting par 72 and is miles away from the lead. It is far from guaranteed that he will put someone else’s green jacket on on Sunday.
