CNN International host Christiane Amanpour has apologized for comparing President Trump’s four-year term to Kristallnacht after being convicted in both the US and Israel.
The veteran correspondent told her viewers on Monday that she regretted any pain her remarks caused.
“And tonight, finally, a comment on my program at the end of last week. I watched the 82nd anniversary of Kristallnacht, as I often do – it’s the event that sparked the horrors of the Holocaust, ”she said of the“ Night of the Crystal, ”a series of violent Nazi pogroms.
“I also took note of President Trump’s attacks on history, facts, knowledge and truth. I shouldn’t have put the two thoughts next to each other,” continued Amanpour, 62.
“Of course, Hitler and his evils stand alone in history. I regret any pain my statement may have caused. My point was to say how democracy can potentially slip and how we must always zealously protect our democratic values, ”she added.
In her inflammatory comments last week, Amanpour said: “After four years of a modern day attack by Donald Trump on the same values, the Biden-Harris team promises a return to normal.”
Amanpour has been attacked by the Anti-Defamation League, officials from the Trump administration and the Israeli government.
Omer Yankelevich, Israel’s minister for diaspora affairs, accused them of making the settlement because of “cheap headlines or a political agenda,” the Jerusalem Post reported.
According to the Israel Hayom newspaper, he urged CNN to be a partner in the fight against anti-Semitism.
