Cal McNair, CEO of Houston Texans, is still debating which direction to take his franchise in with his openings as head coach and general manager, and has gathered many opinions, including that of quarterback Deshaun Watson.
McNair told ESPN last week that he recently had dinner with Watson and the direction of the Texan franchise became known during their conversation. McNair wanted to hear Watson’s thoughts and opinions on who should be the next head coach, and Watson gave McNair his opinion.
McNair told ESPN that he welcomes Watson’s contribution, respects his opinion, and wants the star quarterback to be happy.
McNair also confirmed that he has hired search firm Korn Ferry to help him with his head coach and GM search.
“I understand how important the recruitment of general managers and head coaches is to this organization,” McNair told ESPN. “My goal is to hire great people who are a good fit for the Houston Texans. I want to build something that our fans, players and staff will be proud of.
“It’s okay to be in the process of building as any great organization goes through some difficult times, but I still firmly believe that the future is very bright for this organization.”
Romeo Crennel has been Houston’s interim coach while Jack Easterby has been the interim general manager since the Texans fired Bill O’Brien last month.
