The “Queen of Christmas”, Nina West, starts the Christmas season with her new video for “Cha-Cha Heels”. She speaks EXCLUSIVELY to HL about this John Waters inspired song and what YOU can get for Christmas.
There was a boost to be made Die Hard officially a Christmas movie in recent years – because the Bruce Willis Action epic takes place during the holidays. According to this logic John Waters’ Female problems is Likewise a vacation film. The biggest argument for this can be found in “Cha-Cha Heels”, the new video from drag queen and vacation lover. Nina West. Born from the cult scene in which Dawn Davenport (played by the patron saint of Drag herself) Divine) doesn’t get the shoes she wants, Nina lovingly recreates the cinematic tantrum as she celebrates the joys (and pains) of the holiday season.
“That scene with Divine and that Christmas tree,” Nina said when speaking to HollywoodLife in 2019, right after the release of their Holiday EP, The western Christmas ever“And throwing that Christmas tree at your mom is to me and always made me stand out as one of them, more like the most memorable moments in a movie about the holidays.” To ring your bells even more, the video “Cha-Cha Heels” also features elements from other works by John Waters, including Serial mom and Hairspray.
Nina took some time to build her own North Pole (she loves Christmas so much that she at least has it five Trees in their house) that you can ONLY talk to HollywoodLife about the new video. She also lets all of those secret Santa Clauses know what to put on their stocking on December 24th before delivering a special Christmas message.
HollywoodLife: “Cha Cha Heels” celebrates the work of John Waters, not just Female Trouble, but also Serial Mom and Hairspray. What inspired you to include these other films in the music video since the title of the song is from Female Trouble?
Nina West: You know, we wanted to do a full one Hairspray The Musical Treatment and concept with the classic John Waters film Female problems, and that was the real intent when we wrote this song last summer in 2019. However, when the time came to create and film this video during COVID, we encountered many obstacles including the need to be accountable. This meant smaller to almost nonexistent auditions, COVID tests and a strong awareness of limitations and accessibility. Like everyone else trying to create during this time, we had to come up with a new story for the video, and that’s how we celebrated three of my favorite John Waters films.
Do you remember your first John Waters film? When and where were you introduced to his work?
I remember seeing my first John Waters film. It was Hairspraywith Divine, Ricki Lake, Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono … and it changed my life. It was the soundtrack that I remember most clearly. My oldest sister, Emily, was a huge fan of that movie, and she kind of had a tape recording of the soundtrack’s music, and I listened to the opening song over and over … I’d sing into a hairbrush … “Hairspray, my mom told me I did shouldn’t use it … “
I don’t think I got to know the entire John Waters collection and their fabulous QUEER voice until college … movies like Pink flamingos, polyester, cry baby… all … classics.
Like you, John Waters is a proud, devoted Christmas reveler. Let’s say you had access to Michele Visage’s credit card – what would you buy John for Christmas?
I would buy John the new chia pet in the shape of RuPaul. It’s fabulous, camp, chic. And affordable!

What can people bring Nina West for Christmas this year?
If you are a Georgia resident you can now register to vote and prepare to vote in the Senate runoff on January 5th. That would be the best present. And when you are not in Georgia, you can reach out to family and friends to express the importance of this vote and regain control of the Senate. MERRY CHRISTMAS! LADY BUGS!
What is your Christmas message for 2020?
I know Christmas this year will look very different than Christmas remembered, but I say turn on my vacation EP, THE WEST CHRISTMAS ANYTIMEand make new traditions … and include staying safe and sound, masking yourself and bringing us all safely into 2021!
