LAKE FOREST, IL – Bears fourth year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky will return to the grid when Chicago (5-5) takes on the Green Bay Packers (7-3) on Sunday night, head coach Matt Nagy announced on Friday.
“Right now we’re excited. Mitch is ready,” said Nagy. “This is an opportunity for him.”
Veteran Nick Foles, who took over for Trubisky in Week 3, was unable to train all week after suffering a hip injury towards the end of Chicago’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings on November 16. Foles is officially classified as doubtful for Sunday.
Nagy said Foles is scheduled to travel to Green Bay, but all indications are that Tyler Bray will be Trubisky’s backup Sunday night.
Trubisky’s health had been a problem until recently. The young quarterback spent several weeks inflicting a right shoulder injury on a drafted quarterback keeper – Trubisky’s only snap since touchdown – against the New Orleans Saints on November 1. Trubisky, who returned to workout Monday and picked up all the first-team quarterback staff during the week, reported that the shoulder “felt 100 percent with no pain or pain”.
At the time of the original quarterback change, Trubisky had thrown 560 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. Number 2 in 2017, Trubisky led Chicago into postseason in 2018 but fell sharply last year, prompting the Bears to take action against Foles in the off-season.
“I was surprised more than anything [when I got benched]”Said Trubisky on Friday.” I think at the beginning of the season I was just starting to build some momentum and then it felt like a blind side and then I had to take on a new role.
“In the first few days it sucks being in that role, but I was trying to just keep perspective and think long-term. I want to play in this league for a long time and if I want to do that there are things At this point I just changed my mindset to get into practice, I did my job on the scout team just trying to make the defense look good and take great pride in doing that and preparing them for weeks, and the defense played really, really well, and I feel like being part of being on the scout team and just leading these guys on the scout team and making them look good.
“It was tough, it was an adjustment, but I always hoped for another opportunity.”
Chicago’s offense didn’t go any better under the Foles. The bears, losers of four straights, step 30th in yards per pass attempt (6.0) and total touchdowns (20) in week 12, finishing last in yards per rushing attempt (3.6). That year, Foles passed 1,852 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions for a quarterback rating of 81.0. However, Nagy declined to refer to Trubisky as a starter beyond the weekend.
“I have a hard time predicting this until next week or weeks, just because I think it’s fairest for both of them to just care and focus on Green Bay,” said Nagy. “And I mean that … We really need to focus on Mitch as a starter for Green Bay.”
Trubisky, 26, is 1-4 years old compared to the Packers. Trubisky is said to be a free agent post-season after the Bears turned down the quarterback option for the fifth year.
