Lars von Triers The kingdomThe TV show, which is set on the neurosurgical ward of a Copenhagen hospital and ran for two seasons in the 1990s, is slated to return for a third and final run of five episodes that will be filmed in 2021.
The cult show, which was released as a five-hour film in some areas, was originally planned for three seasons, but was never completed in part due to the deaths of leading actors Ernst-Hugo Järegård and Kirsten Rolffes. Producers Zentropa are keeping details under wraps but have said the new installment will be a mix of new and returning characters.
Von Trier wrote the script again with Niels Vørsel and will direct all five episodes under the title The exodus of the kingdom. The details of the plot are not known, but unresolved stories about the hospital are expected to be investigated and old feuds between the Swedes and Danes rekindled.
Louise Vesth produces via Zentropa Entertainments and the show is a collaboration between Viaplay, DR and Zentropa, which is financially supported by Film i Väst and Nordisk Film & TV Fond, among others.
In addition to the release of the third season, which is slated for 2022 and debuts locally on the streamer Viaplay, restored versions of the eight episodes of the first and second series will also be re-released. TrustNordisk takes care of the sales.
The original two seasons were converted into the 13-episode US drama by Stephen King Kingdom Hospital in 2004.
This will be von Trier’s first step behind the camera The house that Jack built, which was released in 2018, and its first small display company since the early 2000s.
Here is a cryptic statement from Trier:
“Borders come in many forms; These can be lines drawn with rulers on white paper (often invisible to anyone wishing to visit the actual geographic locations). The lines of the borders can be illustrative, if not entirely fictional and downright mean; They can be drawn in a soft red color, practically invisible, and maybe even as a dotted line, almost as if they indicate an apology or even a shame. “
“Nevertheless, the lines hang there in unimaginable numbers and together form those ‘territories’ that the inhabitants are strong enough to defend. Going in and out is often associated with violence, because of course every visitor is expected to return after finishing their business.
“On Earth” is the machine that turns everything (all life, that is) depending on the conflicts the lines create as intended. Whether Exodus actually means “to enter” or “to leave” depends on the angle from which the boundary is observed, but the word simply describes a large number of people together crossing a line drawn in pencil. Why? ….. There is an imbalance between good and bad! The limit has been reached, at least in the kingdom … But I cannot testify that it will be easy and bloodless to open the seven astral locks of the world simultaneously with the doctor’s blood. “
TrustNordisk General Manager Susan Wendt added, “We are absolutely delighted with this announcement and very proud to represent the series The exodus of the kingdom by one of the great authors of our time. With this announcement, audiences around the world can look forward to no less than five brand new episodes of The Kingdom, some of Lars von Trier’s most significant and beloved works. We have great faith in the project and firmly believe that something unique will emerge again within the walls of the kingdom. “
Producer Louise Vesth added, “Zentropa is very proud to announce this great finale of The kingdom. Hospitals, horror and humor with Lars von Trier at the helm are simply the perfect series addiction. With the five new episodes in The exodus of the kingdomThe series will have a total of 13 episodes. “
