Boxing’s greatest superstar Canelo Alvarez put on a dominant show on Saturday night to end the big fight in 2020. He drove to a unanimous decisive victory over the previously undefeated champion Callum Smith and won the super middleweight titles of the magazines WBA, WBC and The Ring.
The scorecards are 119-109, 119-109, and 117-111, all for Alvarez.
In front of 15,000 fans (20% capacity) at the San Antonio Alamodome, Alvarez (54-1-2, 36 KOs) chased Smith (27-1, 19 KOs) and punished him with a series of consistent jerks, overcuts and hooks for 12 rounds. Alvarez became the first uniform champion from Mexico in super middleweight history.
“I am the best in the world,” said Alvarez in the DAZN broadcast about an interpreter. “In the first round I was trying to see what he brings, the skills or whatever, but as you can see I showed what I am.”
In the later rounds, the intrigue of the fight shifted from who would win to whether Smith Alvarez would survive the devastating blows and make it into the distance.
The 6-foot-3 Smith had a 7-inch height advantage and an 8-inch range advantage over the 5-foot-8 Alvarez. But it didn’t matter because Alvarez was the great bully on Saturday night, removing the distance Smith prefers and constantly hitting the British boxer on the head and body.
“He was the better fighter tonight,” said Smith. “He’s smart. He’s smart. He sets you little traps and makes you think. Before you know it, he closes the bottom. He’s a good fighter, but I’m just a little disappointed with me. His push was really good I was a bit surprised. His defense was really good. “
Alvarez has now defeated two Smith brothers – he knocked out older brother Liam Smith as a junior middleweight in 2016 and defeated Callum Smith on Saturday.
Alvarez – widely regarded as one of the top two pound-for-pound boxers in the world, the sport’s best-selling fighter and already a four-division champion – has now won The Ring magazine’s title in three different weight classes.
He landed 43% of his punches and 57% of his power punches per CompuBox on Saturday in a full performance that also saw his defense shine. Smith landed only 18% of his punches and 24% of his force punches.
It was Alvarez ‘first fight since Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN split after contractual disputes, and he returned to the ring as his own promoter with little in-ring rust for the first time in 13 months.
“I AM BACK!” He wrote as part of a Twitter post early Sunday morning.

Even at the age of 30 and with 57 professional fights, Canelo is still looking good. He continues to intimidate opponents, with fighters often going into survival mode as soon as they feel those blows, and it becomes difficult to find someone super middleweight who can give Alvarez a real threat.
But Alvarez said after the fight he felt great at the super middleweight division and noted that he doesn’t want to fight the scales. Its main goal is to unify all belts in the division. Billy Joe Saunders currently holds the WBO belt and Caleb Plant the IBF belt.
The bigger question, however, is whether Alvarez will agree to a trilogy fight with Gennadiy Golovkin after two highly competitive bouts that ended in a tie and Alvarez victory.
“I don’t run away from anyone. I just showed that I fought the best,” said Alvarez. “If he’ll take the fight, I’ll take it. But I’ve only shown that I’m fighting the best.”
