Dustin Diamond, the actor who played the beloved nerd Screech on the original Saved by the bell The television series was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, its representative confirmed on Thursday.
Diamond, 44, was admitted to a Florida hospital earlier this week after experiencing pain all over his body.
“We can confirm that Dustin has cancer,” confirmed his spokesman. “It is very serious, although we are still waiting for more details that we will have shortly. He is in great pain.”
“He’s on chemotherapy right now, so he’ll be there for at least another week and then we’ll find out when he’ll get home,” his spokesman told Entertainment Weekly. “By next week we will have a much better understanding of the severity of his condition and the treatments he will need to keep him comfortable.”
It is not immediately clear what type of cancer Diamond has.
When Diamond first arrived at the hospital, he was in immense pain and “faded and felt sleepy and tired”.
The former child star also has a case of shingles, which makes the pain worse. His spokesman says he is “fine” for the time being, but it will be a difficult road.
Diamond is best known for his character Samuel “Screech” Powers, one of the main characters in the original Saved by the bell Series that ran from 1989 to 1992. He also appeared in subsequent series The college years and The new class, as well as Good morning, Miss Bliss, Saved by the bellPredecessor.
He’s the only original cast member who didn’t appear when the series was last restarted.
Former castmate Mario Lopez said he reached out to Diamond when he heard about the cancer diagnosis and posted a relapse photo of the couple on his social media.
“I connected with Dustin tonight and while the news of his diagnosis is heartbreaking, we remain confident he will get over it,” wrote Lopez. “I pray for him and his family and for a speedy recovery. God bless.”
