Episode 287 contains a talk by Chris Brennan on the concept of reception in traditional astrology and how it can be used as a powerful mitigating factor in the interpretation of natal charts.
By and large, reception occurs when a planet is placed in a sign ruled by another planet and the ruler of the sign is looking at the host planet.
Since the zodiac signs were originally conceived as the homes or places of residence of the planets, the reception was conceived as what happens when a host planet greets and supports guests who stay in its home.
Medieval astrologers often viewed reception as a powerful mitigating factor that could make aspects of benefactors even more positive or, alternatively, difficult aspects of malefactors more constructive.
In the first part of the lecture I talk about the history and philosophy of this concept, while in the second half I present a number of contemporary diagram examples to demonstrate how the technique works in practice.
