The actress and South Korean drama star Song Yoo-jung died at the age of 26, according to her representatives.
Song was found dead in her Seoul apartment on Saturday, the Sublime Artist Agency said in a statement. The agency said she died suddenly but didn’t elaborate on the cause.
“Yoo-jung was a friend who always made us happy with a big smile and a great actress who acted with a passion greater than any other,” said the agency.
Her family mourned her at a private funeral on Monday, the agency said.
Song began her career as a model for Estee Lauder and Baskin Robbins before breaking into the K-drama world golden rainbow 2013. She later starred in the 2019 web series Dear my nameand appeared in several music videos during her career.
Song’s sudden death on Tuesday re-sparked discussion of suicides in the South Korean entertainment industry, particularly in the K-pop world. Korean management companies are known for turning young artists into pop idols and megastars, but sudden fame in the past has challenged others.
Young stars like singer Kim Jong-hyun (27), Sulli (25) and Goo Hara (28) have died of suicide in recent years.
“It is not easy for public entertainers like me,” Goo said in a statement to fans before her death. “We have taken a closer look at our private lives than anyone else and suffer from pain that we cannot even discuss with our family and friends.”
The suicide talk intensified this week after 28-year-old South Korean rapper Iron was found dead in his apartment on Monday, the South China Morning Post reports. The native Chung Heon-chul became known as a reality show contestant in 2014.
South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, especially among developed nations.
