I hope you had your tissues ready for the closing episode of Riverdale. Not only did the CW series air their final episode before the time jump, but every single couple on the series has decided to break up – from the adults to the kids.
However, the most emotional moment of the episode came in just three minutes when Archie (KJ Apa) dreamed of his late father Fred (Luke Perry). In a dream Fred and Mary (Molly Ringwald) stuck together and took pictures of Archie, Veronica (Camila Mendes), Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse).
“I can’t believe we’re here. Archie, you’re just graduating,” Fred said to his son. “I didn’t think that I would live to see this day.”
Perry died in March 2019 after suffering a stroke at the age of 52 Riverdale was in the process of filming the third season. The show paid tribute to the star in the season four premiere, which aired in October 2019. Archie subsequently found out that his father had been killed in a car accident. Perry is a former Beverly Hills, 90210 costar Shannen Doherty Guest star in the episode.
During the graduation episode, Fred was mentioned many times as Archie and Mary, he could have been there to see his senior year. Betty even admitted that not all parents were alive to see the service during her Valedictorian speech.
Elsewhere during the lesson, each couple decided to mark it as finished. Archie and Veronica had already been pretending to be together since prom when she found out he was kissing Betty. Nevertheless, they spent the night together on the last day of school. Archie then decided, much to her disappointment, to join the army.
Betty also revealed the kiss to Jughead, who assured her that he still loved her. However, when it was time for both of them to go to college, they focused on themselves rather than their relationship and promised that they would still love each other.
Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) ended her relationship with Toni (Vanessa Morgan) and decided to stay in Riverdale to get her family back on track. Meanwhile FP (Skeet Ulrich) and Alice (Girl amick) went their separate ways when he left town to protect Jellybean (Trinity Likins), and Hermione (Marisol Nichols) left Hiram (Mark Consuelos) to join the Real Housewives.
Though the Four Cores promised to meet at Pop a year after leaving town, Jughead was the only one to show up.
“It would be six years before I saw my friends again,” he said with a voice over, teasing the imminent time jump. “We’d be different people, each of us, brought together by a new crisis and a new secret. But that’s another story for another day.”
The first three episodes of the fifth season were due to air in May 2020 as the end of the fourth season, but were delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The next episode will be seven years after graduation. Archie returns to the remains of Riverdale and eventually enlists the rest of the group for help.
Riverdale airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on The CW. ET.
