As a fashion editor, I always think of bare lip products in the context of a closet: they’re like the white t-shirt in your wardrobe – it’s not necessarily the most exciting thing in your collection, but it is certainly the hardest work. Choosing a nude shade isn’t exactly a walk in the park. Black women probably understand this better than anyone: it took makeup companies decades to recognize the wide variety of deep and dark skin tones. Neutral hues, marketed as “universal” nude lip colors, generally distort the ashes and wash away the brown skin – so no, this is doing us a disservice.
