They’ll be praying for check-out time this April as Vertigo Releasing announces the arrival of acclaimed hotel chiller THE NIGHT.
THE NIGHT is described by ROGEREBERT.COM as a “remarkable evocation of Cubic horror” and is an outstanding debut by the Iranian-American writer / director Kourosh Ahari with fantastic leading roles by Shahab Hosseini (winner of the Cannes and Berlin Film Festivals for The Salesman and A. Separation) and Niousha Noor (Here and Now) as a beleaguered couple haunted by the past. Set on a long, dark night of the soul, the film is superbly edited, with a nerve-wracking soundtrack and a slow feeling of fear – it manages to combine a sensitive look at the immigrant experience in the US with some really harrowing horror moments.
The film was awarded the Jury Prize at the Molins Film Festival 2020 in Barcelona and was also shown at the Sitges, Santa Barbara and Nightstream film festivals last year. THE NIGHT was filmed in a Los Angeles hotel that is suspected of being haunted, which makes The Overlook positively inviting by comparison. It’s a chiller that, like The Babadook and Hereditary, shows that horror, rooted in family grief and guilt, is the most terrifying of all. Ahari’s stunning debut is the first US-produced film to be released in Iran since the 1979 revolution. It’s a brilliant and nightmarish vision of a masterful new talent – with an ending that M Night would kill Shyamalan for. The film is reminiscent of the recent outstanding chillers His House and The Vigil, the Iranian horror favorites Under The Shadow and the Turkish cult fearsome Baskin.
With The Night, director Kourosh Ahari made history because it was the first film produced in the USA to be licensed for theatrical release in Iran since the revolution. The psychological thriller follows in the footsteps of The Shining and draws viewers to a hotel that is both menacing and inviting, and where the ghosts of the past still linger around every corner. The horrors that linger in the corridors are more real and terrifying than any movie monster in a mask. That night you will never want to spend a night away from home again.
Vertigo Releasing acquired the film from Premiere Entertainment Group, which is responsible for international distribution. The film is being produced in Iran by Alex Bretow for Mammoth Pictures, Ahari for Mammoth Pictures, Jeffrey Allard (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) for Indie Entertainment, Cheryl Staurulakis for Orama Filmworks, Armin Amiri for Supernova8 Films and Mohammad Dormanesh for Ayat Film Company. Terry George (Hotel Rwanda) is a consulting producer. George Rush, Behnam Bebahani, Leo Staurulakis, Ryan Clarkson, David Spisak, Chris Johns and P.K. Patel Executive Produce. THE NIGHT comes from the production company Mammoth Pictures in collaboration with 7Skies Entertainment, Indie Entertainment, Orama Filmworks, Leveler Media and Supernova8 Films. IFC Midnight (The Babadook) released THE NIGHT in theaters and Premium On-Demand in North America, where it topped the charts on digital platforms.
