SpongeBob SquarePants and the underwater creatures of Bikini Bottom are back in an insane adventure that fans are sure to enjoy. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run Krabby Patty, the protagonist, is looking for his missing best friend. Gary the snail has been kidnapped. SpongeBob and his goofy cohorts mobilize to save the adorable slug. You will learn valuable lessons in courage and friendship. Sponge on the run is extremely silly, but packs a lot of heart and the typical humor of the TV show.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run Plankton (Mr. Lawrence) continues his never-ending quest to find the secret formula behind Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown) ‘s delicious crab cakes. Pointing out the real obstacle to achieving this goal, his devoted robot wife Karen (Jill Talley) points out the only essential contributor to the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob SquarePants (Tom Kenny). Plankton needs some nefarious plan to get SpongeBob out of the restaurant.
Meanwhile, the vain and bad-tempered King Poseidon (Matt Berry) has a problem with the beauty regime in Atlantis City. His snail slaves have run out of slime. He can’t get his mucus facial every day. The king issues a decree on snails that uses plankton to his advantage. When Gary disappears, SpongeBob and Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke) go on a road trip to find the treasured pet snail. The absence of SpongeBob causes chaos in Krusty Krab. Mr. Krab and an annoyed Squidward (Rodger Bumpass) realize that business cannot survive without SpongeBob.
Sponge on the run has a pretty simple storyline, but loads the film with new characters that are really bizarre. Keanu Reeves steals the show as Sage whose head lives in a glowing, rolling tumbleweed that acts as SpongeBob and Patrick’s spirit guide. He shows up regularly to remind best friends to be brave. Reeves’ scenes are insane, but fun and surprisingly insightful. Snoop Dogg and Danny Trejo have crazy cameos too.
Sponge on the run, the third film in the franchise, is the first to use all of the CGI animation. The classic 2D look of SpongeBob made the show unforgettable, but the visual upgrade is welcome here. Bikini Bottom, Atlantis City and Kamp Koral, where the characters meet as children, radiate vivid colors and brilliant textures. Paramount Animation is increasing its play to match the cinematic quality of Pixar and Disney.
Sponge on the run I’ll try the patience of anyone who doesn’t find the SpongeBob formula entertaining. The plot is wafer-thin and relies on stupid gags. The film is red meat for the devout adult fan base and is sure to appeal to young children. I’m not a huge SpongeBob fan, but I was pleasantly amused by the crazy antics and Keanu Reeves’ rolling tumbleweed head. The film is a fitting tribute to SpongeBob creator Stephen Hillenburg, who sadly passed away from ALS in 2018. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run is a production by Paramount Animation, Nickelodeon Movies, and Media Rights Capital (MRC). It will premiere with the launch of the Paramount + streaming service on March 4th.
