We always thought Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer were heroes, but now they’re really stepping into their superbag. The real friends are the stars of Netflix’s new comedy film Thunder power where they play two estranged childhood best friends whose unexpected reunion goes wrong. Lydia (McCarthy) visits her former friend Emily Stanton (Spencer), a scientist who reveals she created a genetic platform that gives ordinary people superpowers. Although the scientist warns the other woman Not To touch something, Lydia accidentally doses herself with superpower, and the two decide to join forces as Chicago’s first all-powerful team of crime fighters. Together they taser and beat your city to protect you from the super villains who want to destroy you. (That includes Jason Bateman with crab claws, so it can’t be all bad, am I right?)
Thunder power was written and directed by Ben Falcone and will serve as his and McCarthy’s fifth director-actress couple project. In addition to Spencer, McCarthy and Bateman, the film stars Bobby Cannavale, Pom Klementieff, Kevin Dunn and Melissa Leo play with a cameo by Falcone, who is driven in the neck by Spencer in the trailer. They are clearly giving the whole MCU and DCEU a run for their money when it comes to this superhero gig. Check out the trailer above and watch this Thunder power when it premieres on Netflix on April 9th.
