Taxpayers have more time this year to get their taxes in order.
The Internal Revenue Service plans to move the tax return deadline from April 15 to one month through May 15, CNBC’s Ylan Mui confirmed.
This gives taxpayers additional time to file their 2020 tax returns and pay any amounts owed to the IRS. As May 15th falls on a Saturday, the final deadline for applicants may be the following Monday.
The move from the IRS and Treasury Department came after calls for $ 1.9 trillion to extend the tax season after the US rescue plan was passed. This meant the agency was tasked with submitting another round of stimulus payments in the process of processing tax returns and refunds.
The IRS and Treasury Department did not respond to CNBC’s request for comments on the enlargement.
