LONG LIVE THE SNYDER CUT!
In 2017, Warner Bros. Studios were released justice league, the fifth film from the established DCEU (DC Extended Universe) and the third film in the series directed by Zack Snyder. The film, starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot and Momoa, was filmed after the events of Batman vs Superman in 2016: Dawn of Justice; Watch Batman and Wonder Woman recruit Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg after Superman’s death to save the world from the catastrophic alien threat that invades Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons. Despite the hype surrounding this DC superhero team justice league received mixed to negative reviews from both critics and moviegoers; Many praise the actions of some characters but draw criticism in the plot, writing, pacing, doing Villians, and questioning the use of CGI. In addition, the tone of the film has been heavily criticized and inconsistent with Snyder’s earlier films within the DCEU. After its theatrical release justice league Earned $ 657 million at the box office but was considered a box office error due to the fact that the feature’s production budget, including marketing, was approximately $ 750 million. Warner Bros. lost $ 60 million on the superhero film. After the film was released, the truth about the insides of the “behind the scenes” of justice league came to light, including WB studio managers micromanaging the project, Snyder’s sudden departure due to a family tragedy and avenger Director Joss Whedon comes in to complete the film and Warner’s assignment is re-shot to complete the feature. The Justice League failure cemented Warner Bros.’s idea of re-investigating the DCEU. This resulted in a rescheduling of the originally intended and future plans, the future rates should be further examined. The idea of what Snyder was making for the film, however, remained general and elusive, and many wondered if Warner Bros. would ever release an alternate version of justice league? Now, four years after its release and a conservative drive to bring Snyder’s vision to light, Warner Bros. Studios, HBO Max and director Zack Snyder are returning to this superhero film with the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, an alternate Director’s Cut of the 2017 film. After all the anticipation and hype surrounding this monumental release, the film keeps its promise to be the definitive version of justice league or is it a bloated version of a movie that can’t keep its superhero identity?
The world still mourns the death of Superman (Henry Cavill), who had become a symbol of hope for many, along with other superheroes like Bruce Wayne / Batman (Ben Affleck) and Diana Prince / Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot). Continued their crime-fighting efforts after the absence of the Man of Steel. Unfortunately, the sudden disappearance of the Kryptonian visitor on earth was noticed by Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds), an ancient alien being trying to retrieve the “mother boxes,” three objects of immense power that were safely secured by the three for thousands of years great races of the earth (i.e. the Amazonians, the Atlanteans, and humanity). Realizing the sizable threat Steppenwolf and his army of vicious winged monster Parademons pose to the world, Batman and Wonder Woman set out to assemble a team made up of three other metahumans who they know are half human / half Atlanteans are Arthur Curry, known as Aquaman ( Momoa), the runabout Barry Allen, known as The Flash (Ezra Miller), and Victor Stone (Ray Fisher), a cyborg who was created and gifted by one of the mother boxes with incredible powers . As the team gathers together and as powerful as these heroes are, Batman finally realizes that their combined efforts may or may not be enough to prevent Steppenwolf from executing his terrible endgame plan, which is trying to regain his honor with his nephew / master, Darkseid (Ray Porter), the almighty ruler of Apokolips.
THE GOOD / THE BAD
As I’ve mentioned many times in previous superhero movie reviews, I’m more of a Marvel fan than a DC Comics fan. As you’d expect, my fanboy interest in the MCU feature films definitely outweighs the films within the DCEU. However, that doesn’t mean that this would completely beat up the DCEU (like many others), but I can’t deny that their films have several key issues that harm the film when it is highlighted as cinematic superhero greatness. One of those problems was in 2017 Justice League, a film that was to be the “crowning glory” of the established DCEU and one of the biggest disappointments (at least for me). As mentioned in my “Review of the 2017 Film”, the film had some interesting parts, but it didn’t really live up to my expectations, especially with all the inherited hype and anticipation that came with it. A confusing plot, a lackluster villain, and a questionable decision justice league rather contentious. It all felt so rushed and didn’t even feel like a Snyder movie that seemed to be part of Whedon’s re-shoots (again). justice league was definitely a low benchmark for the DCEU … even after poor reception from Suicide Squad. Heck, I haven’t seen the entire movie (in its entirety) of justice league I’ve been seeing a few clips here and there on YouTube since watching it in November 2017, but I don’t even have a copy of the film … be it a physical or a digital version. So I join the masses so as not to particularly bother about it justice league and kind of wanted to see Zack Snyder’s original version of the project come to light. Yes, I understand all of the circumstances surrounding production issues during the Justice League and can see why the film failed. Warner Bros. seems to have downplayed this idea and continues to reject the idea of an actually existing “Zack Snyder” cut.
In addition, the DCEU has continued with films such as Aquaman, Shazam !, birds of prey, and Wonder Woman 1984 and it is obvious that after the Justice League’s hesitation, Warner Bros. lost some interest in this established superhero world. This is especially noticeable with the studios restarting the Batman franchise with Batman dating back to 2022. In it, the actor Robert Pattinson enters the role and not Ben Affleck. The same is true for 2019 joker, in which actor Joaquin Phoenix played the title role of Batman villain rather than actor Jared Leto, who played the character in 2016 Suicide Squad. So, Justice League was the so-called “turning point”, which (unfortunately) broke the camel’s back; Step out of the cinematic universe of DC’s superheroes in an uncharted territory and see Warner Bros. take a new direction from the DCEU. However, the big question remained on everyone’s lips. Will WB ever release the Snyder cut of the film?
Of course, hope is eternal and hope is what I can talk about again Zacks Snyders justice league, a Director’s Cut version of what Zack Snyder originally planned for the project. After the bad reviews and criticism from justice leagueit became clear that the theatrical version wasn’t exactly the original version of what Snyder intended; lobbying a lot for the idea that his editing of the film be released in some form. With Warner Bros. downplaying this idea (and even confirming that there are no plans to release an alternate version of Justice League) it seemed that the Snyder cut of the film would never see the light of day. That was until 2020 when it became known that Zacks Snyders Justice League would finally be released exclusively on HBO Max at the premiere as a four-hour Director’s Cut and at the premiere in 2021. For one thing, I was pretty shocked by this news and very curious about the step behind it. Regardless, I was very interested in Snyder’s version of the film, especially my less positive opinion on the original 2017 film. After this announcement, the anticipation of the project’s investable release in 2020 and into 2021 continued to grow, and the internet “exploded” with all the news, pictures or advertising trailers for the upcoming film. Like I said, I was very curious to see what was added and / or changed from the theatrical version so I was eagerly awaiting the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League come out. And now … it’s finally here! What did I think of that? Is the movie good? Does it keep the promise of all of these #releasethesnydercut petitions and consultations online? Well, in truth … it does. Zack Snyder’s Justice League is a huge improvement on the 2017 theatrical version; Expanding its story and characters to create a healthier, more engaging superhero endeavor. There are a few flaws in Snyder’s version, but these are tiny compared to the great story told in this alternate director cut of the film. In short, believe the hype!
As a side note, I have to applaud and thank all of these people and fans out there for helping and supporting the entire #releasethesnydercut movement that followed after the poor reception in 2017 justice league. Although I wasn’t part of the movement, I supported those who were pretty vocal about seeing Snyder’s original version of the film to see the light. Personally, I think that without their support and continued urge to raise awareness of the movie’s existence (i.e., was it or not), Zack Snyder’s Justice League would not see the light of day. It’s just meant to show you how powerful the voices of fandom are, especially in the world today. So I have to thank those who help bring this project back to life. From the fans to the cast, the team behind the scenes to Snyder. Greetings to all of you!
With Snyder at the helm and restoring his original vision for the project, Zack Snyder’s Justice League (or rather) ZSJL as some call it) is a huge improvement that outweighs and surpasses the original 2017 release in almost every way. This enhancement to the film is compounded by the idea that Snyder’s editing doubles its running time and the Justice League switches from a two-hour film to a shocking four-hour film. Yes, even longer than Batman Vs Superman: Dawn Justice Ultimate Edition or even like Avengers: Endgame or the extended edition of Lord of the Rings; The return of the king. With a hefty length (twice as long as the original running time of the film), Snyder is allowed to bring back his original vision for justice league and letting the story itself “breathe” much more by heavily thickening the narrative with material edited from Whedon’s version of the project. In truth, this makes the film more coherent and rounder by giving ZSJLs Share a healthier, greater superhero team made up of some of DC’s greatest and brightest characters. This is a great comparison to the original film, which seemed quite rash in its narrative and lacked the necessary character development, especially since so many characters were introduced into it justice league. Because of the new term, it is about almost everything justice league will be greatly expanded and improved; Creating a more balanced story that is entertaining and detailed at the same time. Each character has a clearer motivation, each story element is handled better, and the action sequences are all the more impressive. I also like the idea of how Snyder breaks the film down into different film chapters, which gives an almost epic sense of adventure to cinematic storytelling. In the end, whether you really liked the movie or just a little, there’s no denying that the Snyder cut from justice league is the improvement over the original film and is the more definitive version of the two.
And now…. the biggest question of all…. the differences between Snyder’s cut and Whedon’s cut from justice league. By and large, the story is in ZSJL remains the same as in my writing for “The Story” for this review. The same goals and narrative beats between the two films; Batman and Wonder Woman find various meta-human individuals in their indictment against Steppenwolf, who invades Earth in search of the three mother crates. Hence, those looking for something drastically different between the two films and having Snyder’s cut of the feature to have a different ending, or at least a different main body narrative, will be disappointed. Personally, I wasn’t expecting that, so it didn’t bother me. To be sure, ZSJL is not like an expanded version from 2017 justice league like like expanded editions of Lord of the Rings Trilogy did. Actually, ZSJL is more like what director Ridley Scott did with his director’s editing of his historical epic from 2005 kingdom from sky;; Create certain scenes with a little more context and / or in a different way, but keep the narrative endgame. That’s pretty much what Snyder cut with justice league. There are still some new elements and storyline beats that will be featured in ZSJL, but the whole story remains the same…. only greatly expanded.
in addition, ZSJL much more in line with Snyder’s two previous DCEUs; Find its iteration of justice league have a more serious / grave / gravitas compared to Whedon’s interpretation in the original film. In the theatrical version of justice leagueMuch of what Whedon shot during the reshoot made it into the film, which seemed a bit shaky / annoying at times and a lot more comedy nuances, which was deemed necessary by the higher positions at WB. That made justice league have a pretty polarizing feel that didn’t feel much like a Zack Snyder movie; To shape the superhero project into something very different from what Snyder originally intended. Thankfully, ZSJL restores Snyder’s original vision and removes many of those unnecessary comedic scenes, bringing the feature back to a Snyder vibe throughout the film from start to finish. This extends to the overall tone of the film as well, which looks epic and great and more in line with the how man of Steel and Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice were. Well, not as serious as BvS, but you get the idea. This is clearly felt during the film’s climate change battle during act three, which is more visually impressive and has more grit / spectacle (both in terms of entertainment and emotional impact) than in Whedon’s 2017 version. I’m not going to spoil it, but it’s ten times Snyder-cut … hands down! Thus, the third film in Snyder’s DCEU is very much realized in ZSJL and is thankfully rewritten justice league into something more coherent and measurable than what Snyder originally wanted to do with this project.
The overall presentation of the film is very interesting in ZSJLSnyder gives money to turn his rough cut of the project into something that is visible to the public. Hence, it is evidence for the fans out there (and for Warner Bros. itself) that Snyder’s film clip ever saw the light of day and is able to see the film in its entirety in its fully rendered edit and visual effects shots. Some CGI images are a bit rough (more on that below), but that didn’t bother me that much and I still managed to understand the film better (visually). Even some of the new scenes have a great cinematography makeover that looks pretty impressive and uses Snyder’s signature of the slow motion shot for dramatic effects. This too makes for ZSJL feel more like Snyder’s work than the original film. I also have to mention the aspect ratio that ZSJL Used in film by abandoning the traditional widescreen aspect ratio and choosing an aspect ratio of 4: 3 instead. This means that the movie will look more boxy with the black bars on the left and right of the screen instead of the top and bottom. This was by design as Snyder’s creative integrity was in making ZSJL look like this. For me, it’s a bit irritating at first, mainly because I’m very used to the traditional widescreen aspect ratio, but I got used to it over the course of the film. I also have to mention the score. a common idea I usually make in my review posts. While composer Danny Elfman is providing the music for the original 2017 movie from justice leagueThe composer Thomas Holkenborg (aka Junkie XL) provides the music for ZSJL. While Elfman’s score was good and definitely worked in the original film, Junkie XL’s score is the more superior musical composition of the two. to produce a soundtrack that (again) feels very “in tune” with Snyder’s handling and film prose and is performed with a more grandiose and bombastic fanfare than Elfman’s score. Great soundtrack through and through … and I loved it.
While I enjoyed the movie immensely, there are a couple of minor flaws that do ZSJL cannot be overcome and while it is definitely a huge improvement over the original theatrical film, there are a few things that keep the feature from being a perfect film. Perhaps the most notable point of criticism that many of Snyder’s film editing criticized is the very bloated running time of the film. Yes, I’ll admit that the benefit of having Snyder doubling the running time of the original Justice League is good, and definitely expands on almost everything in the movie (i.e. story, characters, action sequences, etc.). That being said, the film is very “in love” with its own story, and Snyder seems to indulge in that belief, augmenting various scenes with his stylish bravery. While this can (and most of the time is) a good thing, the film appears to be more of a “slow burner”; something more similar to its 2009 film adaptation Guardian. Basically, what could probably have been done in about three hours is more of a longer run time. That didn’t bother me as much as Snyder’s film is a bit notorious for having extended runtimes as you see it man of Steel and Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Even so, the four-hour runtime of the film is sometimes a bit exhausting and it is clear that some areas of the film could even be shortened and / or edited for three and a half or three and a half years. Again, it doesn’t bother me that much, but it is a noticeable criticism that everyone needs to check.
Another point of criticism comes from some of the movie’s new scenes that use CGI visual effects. How is that a problem? Well, these particular scenes are just the best polish and look a little rough around the edges. One can simply (in some areas) that look like a green screen more convincingly than the most convincing in other sequences originally implemented in the original theatrical version. This is likely due to Snyder’s rough cut of the film being made into a presentable end product. With a limited amount of time to get things moving (less than a year) and a few other mechanisms required to get the graphics into the rough cut of the Snyder, it’s easy to sum up that CGI effects are something not that Snuff match. I didn’t bother myself in that regard, mostly because I thought it would be, but (again) a better polish of the new CGI would have benefited a lot more from it. Some could be turned off a bit as a result.
Then of course there’s the infamous “Knightmare” scene that featured in the movie’s promos and trailers for ZSJL, including the return of actor Jared Leto in repetition of his role as Joker. Yes, the whole scene is really cool, epic and completely “freaked out” and offers a lot of interesting ideas for what is to come in the DCEU, or rather with Snyder’s original vision for the DCEU. However, the entire Knightmare sequence appears to be more of a fan service than a “what if” sort of thing. Scene and feels a bit more redundant for the film that is currently running. It’s one of those “love / hate” things. This also raises the problem ZSJL has in setting certain event keys for future rates which may or may not occur based on the current status of the DCEU. Again, I figured that might be a problem, especially since this is a director’s cut that came out in 2017 and is now four years after the moment of its original release. finding the DCEU in a somewhat confusing area of Warner Bros. without the idea of either continuing with this established universe or restoring Snyder’s original vision and continuity. Again, it is difficult to say what the result will be. Yet, ZSJLWhile he’s laying the foundations, he has some ideas that may never materialize, which is a shame. I keep my fingers crossed that WB will restore Snyder’s original vision for the DCEU after the success of this film.
With the extended term, the occupation of ZSJL Be sure to take advantage of the four-hour runtime, and most notably for the characters, who for the most part suffered from the two-hour time constraints for the original theatrical version. As I mentioned earlier, there is plenty of time to focus on the characters and the paths they are taking throughout the narrative. Perhaps the greatest character to benefit from this is Victor Stone (aka Cyborg). It’s surprising to see how much new material is featured in Snyder’s editing. Restoring key elements of his backstory and character motivations throughout the film. It’s pretty compelling to see Victor transition from a shuddering outcast to his own acceptance within himself and within the Justice League group, and it’s pretty amazing how he becomes the more central focus of Snyder’s cut compared to Whedon’s cut. This is also another piece of evidence for Ray Fishers (True detective) Performance in the film; shows more character depth and insight into Victor’s personality and how cyborg plays throughout the film. As a side note, I have to mention actor Joe Morton (Scandals and Terminator 2: Judgment Day) gets more juicing rolls in the Snyder Cut than Victor’s father Silas Stone.
Likewise, the character of Barry Allan benefits from the long running time of the film, with the character being given new material to play around with, including a brand new introductory scene for him ZSJL. Like the original theatrical version, Barry is still the funnier relief figure and actress Ezra Miller (Fantastic beasts and where to find them and The perks of Being a Wallflower) continues to enjoy the opportunity to play the character for himself from quirky fun and youthful entertainment. The Snyder cut, however, gives both Miller’s performance and the character of the lightning bolt more depth and rounding. It offers more background information on Barry’s past and how much control he has over his “Speed Force” powers than in the original film. The final third act of the battle beautifully depicts this notion, which certainly sets the stage for something truly unique and creative in its own solo film.
Ben Afflecks (Argo and path girl) The portrayal of Bruce Wayne / Batman in ZSJL is almost an entirely different iteration of the character who appeared in the original film. Like Wonder Woman in the original film, Bruce Wayne acts as the glue for the team that is put together as the story progresses. Whedon’s new recordings, however, clearly became the original theater for Affleck’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne. making more carefree moments within the character, which is quite a strength difference compared to the darker / brooding Bruce Wayne Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. The Snyder cut from justice league brings a little more of that BvS Depiction of Bruce Wayne, but still a little different; Find the character for more of an arc of redemption and feel the aftermath of Superman’s death in the previous film. Plus, the Snyder cut gets better performance from Affleck and creates a much more memorable portrayal of Bruce Wayne than what he did in the original film, particularly by getting rid of some of his hackneyed comedy lines.
Next, the character of Superman is introduced in the movie (of course) and the ZSJL certainly improves the look of his character in the context of the justice league Narrative. The build up to its final return has a lot more emotional impact and certain aspects of what happens after that are tweaked and toned down for the better. Plus, it’s so cool to see Superman dawn the black suit in the movie. something Whedon’s version didn’t. However, the character of Superman (as a whole) is pretty much the same presence (within the running time) as in the original justice league. This, of course, is almost intentional and is the narrative of the feature. Even so, it works, and these little tweaks help Henry Cavill (The Tudors and The Witcher) has been so solid in the role since 2013 man from steel. Oh yeah … the movie doesn’t use these remakes and the entire digital upper lip (aka mustachegate) is nowhere to be found ZSJL. Thank God!
Behind him, Arthur Curry / Aquaman gets a better look at the background story of his character. While he isn’t as central to the film’s history as Victor Stone and Barry Allan, we get more insight into why Arthur will harbor his feelings about his past, the kingdom of Atlantis, and the ultimate acceptance of what he could. Plus, Momoa (game of thrones and The bad batch) is still great in the role, adding more depth to Arthur throughout the Justice League history. After all, the Diana Prince / Wonder Woman character benefits the least from ZSJL’s new runtime for new material. She’s still a focal point of the feature, but there isn’t any new material to play with beyond a few expositional moments in some new scenes. Still, Gal Gadot (Ralph breaks the Internet and Death on the Nile) is great as an Amazon warrior and definitely gets more time to shine on the battlefield with ZSJL shows Diana’s skill as a deadly force to be reckoned with; The goal is R-rated violence, which was again rated PG-13 in the original film. In truth, both Wonder Woman and Aquaman receive the least benefit for them ZSJL Cut, but that’s not that important (at least to me) because 2017s wonder Wife continued justice league and 2018 Aquaman comes after the events of justice league;; Finding these two superhero characters getting a setup or already bouncing has been set up in their own solo films.
Perhaps the one who gets the best makeover of Snyder’s cut is in the villains category, with Snyder expanding on the film’s central antagonist character, Steppenwolf, and almost the live-action film debut of Darkseid, the almighty villain and ruler of Apokolips. One thing that the many critics and moviegoers complained about over 2017 justice league was the fact that Steppenwolf was a bit of a villain misfire and physically nondescript. Thank God, ZSJL updates Steppenwolf’s character design for a much better looking and more impressive appearance of the eponymous villain. Yes, the character is still a CGI construct, but more of an imposing and formidable otherworldly being than a slender / human-like alien with a strange human characteristic face. Speaking of the face, even Steppenwolf’s face in Snyder’s cut is a huge improvement over the original film. In addition to his update on looks and appearances, Steppenwolf has a lot more time to uncover his backstory. paint the villain as a tragic figure seeking redemption to return to the good graces of Darkseid by completing his mission to find the mother boxes. This is also reflected in his character dialogue, which was almost completely rewritten for ZSJL, and the actor Ciaran Hinds (game from Thrones and Rome) still provides an impressive voice for Steppenwolf. Fortunately … in this dialog the mother boxes in the Snyder style are not always referred to as “you”. Also … Steppenwolf’s final fate is so much cooler in ZSJL.
Maybe my biggest excitement in that ZSJL was (as mentioned above) the appearance of Darkseid in the film. While I thought he wasn’t going to be a standout character in the movie, the original was justice league The film left out the character of Darkseid entirely, with the exception of a disposable dialogue that mentions DC’s title villain.
Also, as a personal side note, Zack Snyders Justice League is my 575th movie review since I’ve started blogging. This is truly a huge and celebratory milestone for me! I wanted give a special thank you to all my readers, followers, and fellow bloggers for reading my movie reviews and giving me this platform to share (with you guys) my views on cinematic tales.
