After so many fun episodes of Wynonna Earp in a row and with only a few episodes left, we were about to take a deeply emotional excursion. “Life made them this way” has brought all of our heroes into precarious situations, so that they look deep within themselves and decide who they want to be for themselves and who they want to be for others. The aftermath of what happened in the garden and after is coming to a head and things will not be so simple now.
Wynonna wakes up and immediately starts her day with Peacemaker. She goes out, chases demons, goes to bed and does it all over again. With each repetition, she gets more tired, drunk, and bored as she repeats over and over. One day she wakes up and Peacemaker is not on her bedside table. Wynonna asks Waverly and Nicole if they know where it is and they worry she might pass out. Waverly pulls out Peacemaker, places her on the table, and confronts Wynonna with an intervention. They are concerned that they will only hunt, pass out, and isolate themselves. You can tell that she is really sad and lonely, but she wipes off her worries by just doing her job to protect all of her friends. Wynonna storms out and Waverly follows him. They exchange harsh words and Wynonna runs away and Waverly runs back to Nicole crying. Nicole says she will come over and realize that she is right and that she has only her best interests in mind. Waverly says she doesn’t want to lose Wynonna. Nicole offers to stay with her, but Waverly tells her to get to work.
Waverly calls Doc and tells her to meet her with the book she took from the garden. It’s still empty inside. She tells Doc to keep it so Wynonna won’t find it, and she tells Doc that Wynonna isn’t doing well. She hopes the book contains the answers she is looking for. She explains that she chose her book to take from the garden because Wynonna and all of her friends are part of her story. Doc calls it smart, but Waverly wonders if it was selfish. Doc calls the garden “Hell” and Waverly says it was more like heaven for her and asks Doc if it feels like being an angel. Two demons approach Doc and Waverly and tell Doc to get out of the way so they can hunt Waverly. Waverly pulls out Peacemaker and tries to shoot, but it doesn’t. Doc asks why she has Peacemaker, but quickly realizes that she has to run. A demon goes after Waverly, but stops as she runs into the mist. She covers her mouth and nose and tries not to breathe them in. She finds a booth and only enters it to quickly realize that she has come across Jolene directly. UH OH! Waverly asks how she could be there and she tells her that after Bulshar’s death she was released and re-entered the world. Then the fog came and kept her trapped in the cabin. Jolene knocks out Waverly.
The demon who was chasing Waverly runs back to Doc and the other demon and tells them what happened. Doc tells them he’s going to get them food from the glory hole, but they inform him that BBD has searched their stash. Suddenly they are all calmed down by BBD agents.
Back in the barn, Wynonna takes out her frustrations on a punching bag. Rachel walks in and tells Wynonna that she wants to train with her. She likes how Wynonna is the only one who doesn’t treat her like a kid. She wants to be able to defend herself. She asks Wynonna to teach her how to be, which causes Wynonna to pause for a moment, but agrees.
At BBD, Cleo brings paperwork to try and exit the Ghost River Triangle. She tries to use her title as a judge, but the woman informs her that most people, even with titles, cannot get out these days. She wishes her luck and returns to her computer screen to submit her request. Suddenly the door creaks and an invisible Billy comes in. The woman tells her that she was released to leave the Ghost River Triangle.
Rachel and Wynonna train in the woods, but Wynonna doesn’t take it seriously and keeps drinking. Rachel says she’s a family, but Wynonna tells her it’s better that she isn’t because nobody wants to be an Earp. Wynonna notices a trail of blood and follows it to one of the demons we last saw with Doc. Rachel runs to the demon to take care of his wound. She recognized him and knows him. He tells them about BBD and how they took Doc. This upsets Wynonna and worries. Then he tells them about Waverly and the fog. Now Wynonna is really scared!
Doc and the demon wake up in a BBD cell. Doc tries to speak to someone to get out, but the man in charge says there has been a lot of sales … Oh, is that a coup? They go over what demons they are and say they already have one of the other demons and immediately torch it, infuriating Doc.
In the cabin, Jolene has tied Waverly and beats her awake. Waverly tells her to just kill her. Jolene shares how her plans failed and Waverly was saved and is now thriving. Jolene mocks her and tells her that she is no longer mad at Waverly. Waverly tells her that she has been in the fog too long because she has lost her mind. Jolene tells Waverly that no matter what she wants to think, they are the same.
Rachel, Wynonna, and Nicole are pacing up and down on the edge of the fog. They know that every second that Waverly is in there affects their chances of staying healthy. Nicole tells them that Cleo is now the Clanton heir and sent her reapers to attack a bus of seniors. They keep trying to call Jeremy, but they can’t reach him. They say they haven’t heard from him in days. They try not to panic and Wynonna says Doc can handle BBD and Cleo can wait. Waverly is number one priority. They accuse Casey of helping after sending Wynonna and Waverly into the fog on Halloween. You plan to put on seatbelts and use his knowledge of the area to navigate the area. Only problem? He’ll only get one of them through. Wynonna and Nicole go back and forth as to why they should be the ones to go with Casey. Rachel raises her hands and slowly steps back with Casey. Their argument climaxes when Nicole locks her foot and announces that it is her turn to save Waverly. Wynonna went into the garden to save Waverly, and she just went home. Now it’s her turn to bring her home. Rachel agrees. Wynonna calls Rachel Judas, but reluctantly agrees. You strap Nicole into her harness.
Jolene goes to Waverly’s purse and takes out Peacemaker. She mocks Waverly, but suddenly drops Peacemaker as it starts to burn her. Waverly laughs at her, but Jolene pulls out a knife and threatens Waverly again. She holds the knife to her throat, but Waverly confidently tells her that she is no longer afraid of her. Jolene sticks the knife into the wooden beam next to her. Jolene gets very close to Waverly’s face and tells her to feel at home. She walks to the wall and we see slashes that Waverly thinks indicate how many days she was trapped there. Jolene asks Waverly if it gets boring playing a girl in need all the time, or if she just doesn’t want the burden of being the hero. Jolene tells her that she was neither ready to sit on the throne in the garden nor stopped Bulshar from enslaving humanity. Waverly says she knew Wynonna was going to stop and she did. Then Jolene tells her in a low blow how Wynonna drinks herself to sleep every night while Waverly giggles in Nicole’s arms. Jolene asks if she is punishing Wynonna for being selected. Jolene then tells her that all of those footprints on the wall are all of the lives Wynonna took from Earth to save Waverly. She tells Waverly to imagine the weight of all the blood on her hands because as an angel she did nothing to help her. So many mind games!
In the cabin, Waverly calls Nicole’s name when Jolene closes the door. Waverly threatens Jolene if she hurts her. Jolene mocks her again and says that as usual she won’t do anything more. Waverly breaks his ties and runs to Peacemaker. She picks it up at Jolene’s, but it’s starting to burn her too! Jolene tells her that it looks like she’s starting to hug her dark side. Angry, Jolene storms up and pushes her into a coat hook. Jolene stabs Waverly and says she wants to do it the nice way, but she insisted. Jolene pulls a feather out of the wound in Waverly’s back.
Wynonna puts a blanket over Casey’s body. Rachel, desperate, says they must bury him on his land. Wynonna tells her they have to leave him and Rachel tells her they can’t because he is her friend and he died to help them. Wynonna yells at Rachel that they don’t have time. You have to go back in there to stop Jolene. Wynonna says she goes in even though she doesn’t know how to get there. Rachell reaches for her hand and tells her Waverly is still alive, so Jolene has her for a reason that gives them a moment to work out a plan. Wynonna starts crying and remembers the harsh last words she spoke to her. Nicole tells her on the radio that Waverly doesn’t want her to die to save her, so they have to go according to plan. B. Rachel tries Jeremy again and Nicole tells them their radio is about to die. Wynonna tells Nicole to come back as soon as possible. Wynonna tells Rachel to stay with Casey’s body to protect it so they can properly bury it.
At BBD, an agent holds Doc at gunpoint and lets him walk down a hallway. The agent tells him he’s going to the “Arc”. You pass a cell where Jeremy is standing. Doc tells the agent to let him out and the rest of the people who are with him. The agent says he must have done something bad to end up in the feeding pit. Sip! Doc takes the gun away from the agent who says he’s only doing what he’s told. Jeremy tells him to go home to his wife and child. He runs away. Jeremy says senior management initiated a protocol and he raised objections. That’s why they put him in the cell. Doc tries to get people out, but BBD agents surround him and the building is locked.
Wynonna arrives at BBD and is taken to a room where she asks to speak to someone. The agent we met earlier enters. She holds out a gun to him and he says he’ll come in peace. He says he is honored to have her as a soldier in his army. He is Agent Graham in senior management. He calls himself the “top” management. He says they need to move her and the other assets to a safer facility. The entire Ghost River Triangle will be swallowed up by the fog in a few days. Wynonna says she won’t go anywhere without her sister of her friends. Wynonna says they have to stay and fight. He tells her that there is no way to fight it. They tried to contain and destroy the fog, but failed. She says she fought bad guys for too long to lose purgatory to “magical weather”. He says he’s sad to lose his best agent, but if she changes her mind where to find him. He takes her to Jeremy and Doc’s cell. She tells him she needs both, but Graham says she can only take one. She chooses Jeremy and Graham questions her choice when Doc is strong. Wynonna then notices Cleo in a nearby cell. Wynonna apologizes to Doc, then announces that she wants Cleo. Cleo announces loudly: “Say what !?” with a shocked expression on her face. Doc and Jeremy both gasp and she tells them to trust her. She promises to come back for her. Wynonna apologizes as she leaves and Jeremy yells “They are going to turn us into food!”
Jolene cradles a bleeding waverly on the floor. Waverly begs her to stop, but says that it will only stop if she “lets it out” and becomes what she should always be. Waverly is crying that she doesn’t want to be an angel, she just wants to go home.
Rachel collects flowers for Casey and promises to take him home as soon as Wynonna fixes everything. Wynonna runs to Rachel, who is still grappling with Casey’s death. In turn, she asks if it is like this for Wynonna all the time. Rachel wipes away her tears and asks where everyone is. Wynonna brings Rachel to Cleo. Rachel immediately protests her decision to choose Cleo over her friends. She explains that since Cleo is now the Clanton heir, she is in control of the reapers. She can send one to them and Wynonna can follow him to come to Waverly. Cleo is asking for something to guide her brand. She gives Jolene a strand of hair that Casey pulled out during his fight. Wynonna tells Cleo to hurry up and points a gun at her. She asks if she will shoot her in the back too. Rachel asks which reaper she will be using. Wynonna threateningly tells Cleo “not Billy” and gives Rachel the gun, which tells her to shoot her if she tries something. Cleo begins the ritual. Suddenly Wynonna can see Billy. Cleo says she tucked a piece of Wynonna’s hair into Jolene’s hair so she can see him and follow him … sure, Cleo! Wynonna gets dressed and Cleo says goodbye to Billy. She then tells Wynonna not to die or pretend she doesn’t care. She gives Wynonna Billy’s leash and they step into the mist. They arrive in the cabin and Wynonna kicks open the door and asks Jolene to “take my hands off my sister, you unholy bitch”. Billy pounces on Jolene and the two start fighting. Wynonna runs to the injured Waverly on the floor and asks what Jolene did to her. Waverly tries to get up and tells Wynonna that Peacemaker is somewhere in the cabin to get it and stop Jolene once and for all. She also says when it comes to stopping her too. Wynonna tells her to stop talking and find a way to get out. Waverly worries when she only sees a mask. Wynonna tells her they’ll share and find out on the way. Jolene successfully defends herself against Billy and throws Wynonna out of the cabin. Waverly screams. Her eyes change and she suddenly gets up and turns to Jolene. Waverly snaps her wrists and Jolene falls to the floor, twitching in pain. Jolene calls Waverly more beautiful and gorgeous than she could ever have imagined. Waverly tells her that she is not for her. Waverly snaps her wrist again and Jolene falls dead to the ground. Waverly !!!
At BBD, Doc tries unsuccessfully to open the cage doors. Jeremy tries to find a way out and understand what they are for. Suddenly, Mercedes sauntered into the room and said she’d been hiding in the vents for hours, waiting for BBD to clear out. (I missed her !!!) She pulls a key card out of her top. She went to the broken keyboard that Doc had damaged and asked if Jeremy could fix it. She holds out a pocket mirror to Jeremy so he can see around the corner while he tries to fix it. She reveals that she was at Amon’s before her curtain call when BBD stormed the bar. Suddenly the cell door opens, but Graham appears out of nowhere and says he is disappointed. He closes the cell door again when Jeremy asks with him that this is not what their mission is about. They vowed to protect the people in the cell with him. Graham says they are all acceptable collateral damage. Mercedes tries to talk her way out of the situation, but Graham shoots her.
In the mist, Wynonna crawls on the floor, writhing in pain as she tries to cover her mouth and nose with her hand. Suddenly the fog shifts and she gasps for the normal air. Then she sees a demonic Waverly stepping out of the mist in front of her. Waverly tells Wynonna that her trip is over. She lets go of her wings and explains that her own journey has only just begun. THIS IS NOT GOOD. I REPEAT. NOT. WELL.
The events and aftermath of being stuck in the garden begin to catch up with the Earps. Getting overtaken by the darker angelic side of Waverly is unsettling to say the least! After years of bubbly Happy Go Lucky Waverly, this dark attitude is harrowing. I found it terribly convenient that Jolene was just in the cabin Waverly stumbled into, but it was an interesting way to unlock her angelic page. Jolene had the perfect opportunity to question everything, with Wynonna making sense in the dumps. She masterfully manipulated the situation. Wynonna will have to work extra hard to convince her that she can help. Nicole will be the key to hopefully bringing her back! I wonder why the mist spat them out, where it was (and where that is). Hopefully she can catch up with everyone else to find out how to save Waverly, stop the fog, and stop BBD from hooking her friends on or killing them. I hope Robin is fine!
The moment Mercedes sauntered into the room, I laughed. She accidentally slipped into BBD, hid, waited, and came to her rescue. Hopefully the shot she took wasn’t fatal because I want to see her more before the series ends!
I also wonder if Cleo has more planned for the Earps and can benefit from everything going wrong now. Rachel wasn’t happy to see her when Wynonna saved her. And if she learns the truth about Billy, she could go to scorched earth herself. She’s got a little more wynonna in her now after spending time together.
With two episodes remaining, the Earps have yet to grapple with the Garden (including the Mist and the Book), Cleo (if she still wants revenge on everyone), BBD, and now Waverly’s darker side. I know these crazy kids can find out, but hopefully they do before more harm is done to the earps. You still have a wedding to plan !!!
