Who doesn’t dream of a life on the street? The caravan is the story of a couple who decide to escape from everyday life and to flee into a different kind of life. However, the truth is that they just had to leave.
The Caravan was written by David Willows and animated by Dave Low. It’s a proud zero-budget animation short that was produced during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The story behind the caravan
In 2010, David published Willows Fragments, a collection of stories and reflections on modern family life. Drawing on personal experiences, the wisdom of the philosophers past and present, and common sense, he brought a unique, thoughtful perspective on a variety of topics, from in vitro fertilization to preparing for the birth of a child all of these problems have ranged from divorce, human loneliness, and the loss of a loved one.
The collection contained two fictional short stories, one of which was titled The Couple in Their Caravan.
Dave Low read The Couple for the first time in their trailer in 2017 and immediately had the idea to turn the story into a short-form graphic novel. However, as is so often the case, work and life got the upper hand, and it was one of those ideas that was put on hold for a while.
The fast forward to 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic as well as the opportunity to finally start working on The Caravan presented themselves. It was the perfect health maintenance illustration project!
The caravan was first realized during the first closure in the form of a graphic novel that Dave David presented on the occasion of his 50th birthday. With the advent of a second lockdown, David and Dave then worked on a project to turn the story and novel into a fully animated short film.
