The Milwaukee Bucks and security guard Jrue Holiday have achieved a four-year extension of $ 135 million that includes bonuses that could bring the deal to $ 160 million, Agent Jason Glushon told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Sunday.
The deal includes a player option for the fourth year in 2024-25, according to Glushon.
“I’m a buck for life,” Holiday said in a video Posted on Bucks Twitter account. “Just know I’m happy to be part of Bucks Nation. Let’s do some big things, man. I’m really excited.”
The move marks the final step in the Bucks’ heavy investment in their trio of Holiday, twice-reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and two-time all-star Khris Middleton as the franchise chases its first NBA title since 1971.
“Jrue is one of the best Guardians in the NBA and we are excited to have him join this extension,” said Jon Horst, general manager of Bucks, in a statement announcing the agreement. “Joining our team has made us better on both ends of the floor. He’s an elite defender and a formidable offensive player with the ability to score, shoot and facilitate.”
Holiday had a $ 26.7 million player option for the 2021-22 season under the $ 126 million five-year deal he signed with the New Orleans Pelicans in July 2017.
Under this contract, Holiday is declining that option but will earn more than $ 30 million over the next season, with his salary increasing each year up to his $ 37 million option for 2024-25.
“We’re grateful for the time we’ve spent learning about the Bucks organization, our team, and the wider Milwaukee community,” said Holiday and his wife, Lauren Holiday, a former US international, in one Explanation. “We appreciate how Jon, Coach Bud and all the staff along with our teammates and fans have supported us since trading in Milwaukee. We have a special group that wants to work and compete for a championship every year.”
The Bucks’ investments in Holiday, Antetokounmpo, and Middleton – even without incentives – are $ 105 million in 2021-22, $ 113 million in 2022-23, and would be $ 120 million in 2023-24 if Middleton exercises a player option for that season.
The 30-year-old Holiday averages 17.0 points, 5.4 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 1.8 steals in his first season with the Bucks this year. He ranks second in the league for thefts per game.
The only other NBA players who averaged at least 16 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 1.5 steals this season are Miami’s Jimmy Butler, Denver’s Nikola Jokic and Toronto’s Fred VanVleet.
Milwaukee paid a heavy price for its off-season acquisition of Holiday as it attempted to strengthen the team in hopes of securing a long-term commitment from Antetokounmpo, who completed a five-year Supermax extension worth $ 228 million in December. Dollar signed.
The Bucks gave up the guards Eric Bledsoe and George Hill. Hampton and two future first-round picks as part of the four-team trade. They also acquired Sam Merrill from the second round and gave New Orleans the right to swap two future picks from the first round as part of the deal.
Milwaukee had the best records of the NBA regular season for the last two seasons, but lost in the 2019 Eastern Conference finals and in the second round of the playoffs last year. On Sunday, Milwaukee (32-17) was two games behind Philadelphia and Brooklyn in the east.
This expansion comes at a time when Holiday is playing its best basketball of the season. The 6-foot-3 guard has scored at least 22 points in each of his last four games. He had 33 points, 11 assists and 7 rebounds on Saturday as Bucks 129-128 won in Sacramento without Antetokounmpo, who was eliminated with a sore left knee.
