Robert Kirkman is most associated with the source material for AMCIs very successfulthe Walking Dead. “One of his other long-running comic series, however, is a very different work, Superhero Deconstruction, known as”Invincible, ”Now given an animated customization that starts on Amazon Prime. The first three episodes made available to the press are a confident mix of superhero origin story, adult action, and incredible language work. At first glance, this would be mistaken for an old-fashioned Saturday morning cartoon, but this is definitely not for the little ones in the house, closer to Amazon’s biggest hit in “The young“As something like”Teen titans, “And at the same time reminds one of them at different times. It’s a very smart show, even if it’s a little early to say if the many characters and elements will come together satisfactorily. With unbelievable talent, “Invincible” got off to a very good start, but no one knows yet whether the landing will match the take-off.

The great Steven Yeun (Oscar nominated for “Minari”) Voices Mark Grayson, a teenager who lives in a world of superheroes, similar to the MCU or “The Boys”. He’s just trying to get through high school while waiting for his superpowers to come when he turns 17, which it apparently often does. At least that means that there are no supers for teenagers in this world. That would be the worst.

The premiere of “Invincible” doesn’t start with Mark, but with an action-packed battle between a group known as the Guardians of the Globe and a couple of giant villains trying to attack the White House. Legendary superheroes include obvious riffs on popular DC icons like Wonder Woman (War Woman here), The Flash (Red Rush), and Aquaman (Aquarius), but the most popular superhero in this universe is a towering character named Omni-Man Das Universe takes on Superman. Spoken by J.K. SimmonsOmni-Man is everyone’s favorite hero, a man who fell to Earth from a planet called Viltrum (sounds familiar?) And became the planet’s protector. Mark just calls him father.

“Invincible” initially feels like a traditional superhero family story a la “The unbelievable”(Sandra Oh Voices Mark’s non-superhero mom), but it hides unexpected twists and turns in the plot that occur at the end of the first episode. Without spoiling, Omni-Man has a lot more to offer than meets the eye. Then his son develops powers and becomes a hero awkwardly called Invincible. A violent tragedy involving the Guardians results in the need for new heroes and the next generation of super rescuers comes into the spotlight under the direction of Atom Eve (Gillian Jacobs), who befriends Mark and brings him to the forefront of heroism. Other heroes vie for notoriety – with names like Rex Splode (Jason Mantzoukas), Dupli-Kate (Malese Jow) and Monster Girl (Kevin Michael Richardson) – as enemies try to fill the power vacuum in their own way. They all want to be the next omni-man or the next guardian. Most of them are too insecure or incompetent to do so.
The animated adaptation of the superhero comic “Invincible” from Amazon has a release date in March and a new clip
All of this super action contrasts with a teen coming-of-age story for Mark, who has to learn how to use his new powers when he’s not making fun of girls like Amber at school (Zazie Beetz) or Eva herself. The two halves of “Invincible” – sixteen melodrama and superhero action stories – don’t always go together, but the writing is smarter than it could have been in the wrong hands, and the familiar beats of “ Invincible ‘are highlighted by one of them, The Best Voices in TV History. The regulars like Yeun, Simmons, Jacobs, Beetz and especially the wonderful Mantzoukas are all great, but the supporting cast have just as much star power, including Mark Hamill, Seth Rogen, Walton Goggins, Zachary Quinto, Mae Whitman, and more. Each and every one of them balances the genre style of an animated superhero show with something that is more informed and real.

The writing clearly attracted the A-list voice cast on “Invincible,” which wisely doesn’t delve too deep into its satirical possibilities. This is more of a simple superhero story than something like “The Boys” which is sometimes played as a parody. Again, a casual look could lead a viewer to mistake it for an average DC Animated Universe show until you see the splatter of blood around eyeballs popping out of skulls when superheroes attack. It’s a show that doesn’t subvert tropes of the genre so much as reinventing them for an older audience.

One of the smartest decisions in making Invincible
was the decision to be animated. It not only enables the creators to be free from
Violence that could otherwise be grotesque, but staged massive action sequences
that would cost and allow millions of dollars for a live action show at the same time
Kirkman’s vast world that can be filled in ways that would otherwise not be possible.
The sheer number of superheroes and supervillains in the first three episodes
wouldn’t be feasible for a typical streaming show and this world feels richer
and deeper than most superhero live action offerings.
Sometimes it can feel almost too full. Mark Grayson’s super coming-of-age arc centers the show, but there are plenty of characters and narrative threads to follow in the first three episodes, and it’s hoped they’ll stop introducing new faces and connecting those after the first Week of the episodes. This first trio is confident and very entertaining. Even so, it’s a show that can easily lead to inconsistent plot, and even then it can be hard to watch if it’s not constrained.
It’s a crazy month for superhero fans. “Zack Snyder’s Justice League“Kind of a win for DC fans HBO max;; “The falcon and the winter soldier” continues wonder‘S Dominance on Disney +. Chances are “Invincible” will be lost in the shadow of two massive super-titans like this headline-grabbing couple. The truth is that in many ways it is the most inventive and interesting of the three projects, something that really seeks to capitalize on the many clichés of the superhero genre in a new way. [B]
“Invincible” will be released on March 26th on Amazon Prime.
