I published a new one As part of Piece at The dropout this evening. With the release of Godzilla versus KongIt seemed like a good time to take a look back at Japan’s legendary reptile monster. In particular, the way Godzilla went from an embodiment of monstrous uncertainty to the protector of the planet. In this context, Shin Godzilla is a fascinating piece of work. Building on co-director Hideaki Anno’s work on previous projects such as Nausicaä from the valley of the wind and Neon Genesis Evangelion, the monster in the middle of Shin Godzilla is eerily unrecognizable, a grotesque intrusion of something that is almost beyond human understanding into the material world. The film is all the more effective for this. . ..
