As we can all agree, we’ve heard and seen a lot about Mexico on the news, social media, and documentaries.
But what is Mexico really like?
Does the news tell us the truth or is there more to see? This question stayed on my mind for a long time until one day I woke up, turned on my phone to check out any unread messages, get updated on Instagram and Facebook, and scroll through Twitter.
But wait a minute, what is it? An add popped up telling me about one Adventure & Fitness Retreat in Mexico.
Mexico, the country from the news I heard about? Like the motto: no risk no funI decided to contact the agency. They answered in just a few minutes and a few minutes later I had booked my next vacation, this time for a fitness retreat in Mexico.
I had every imaginable feeling, I was nervous about the flight, a little worried about what I’ve heard about Mexico so far, and absolutely excited to go there and see it all with my own eyes. I mean, I’m going on an all inclusive fitness and adventure vacation!
This wasn’t your usual trip to Mexico!
The beginning of my Adventure & Fitness Retreat in Mexico
The day has come and I was sitting in the window seat 8K to Mexico. A few hours later the plane landed, the signs turned off, I picked up my things and got off the plane. My first reaction was just wow:it is hot“. I left home during a cold blizzard and ended up in the Caribbean in midsummer.
As I was leaving the airport concourse, someone was already calling my name and giving me a refreshing cold Mexican drink. I checked in all of my bags, took off my winter clothes, and followed him to the car. The three hour drive through the Mexican jungle allowed me to relax and he explained a little bit about Mexican and Mayan history. To be honest, it felt like 20 minutes and we arrived in Mérida, the capital of Yucatan. He also told me that Merida is one of the safest cities in all of America.

After a delicious Mexican meal, we went to the hotel, where I took a cold shower and immediately fell asleep. After a good night’s sleep and a strong breakfast in the hotel, a very nice man from the agency came to the hotel and informed me about the plan for the day.
What the fitness part includes
On the way to the mangroves we stopped halfway, walked a little further off the road into the jungle and started with one Stretch workout including bands and ended up with a nice and intense routine using a massage gun to loosen up the muscles.
After that I felt really hyped and good for kayaking. We got back in the car, passed a beautiful alley near the ocean with an amazing view over the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, and got to the mangroves 15 minutes later. The kayaks were unloaded from the bed of the pickup and we could paddle well through the incredible water forest.
A couple of hours later we drove back into town while stopping on the beach for a while short beach training. I found out that the guy from the agency was also a personal trainer. So we had a short training session on the warm and sandy beach with different strength and mobility exercises, depending on my ability.
What can I say, I was K.O. But very happy too, so we went back to town, I took a quick shower and had a bit of time to relax in the hotel.
In the evening I was picked up again and we went to him Favorite authentic mexican restaurant and ate tacos. The best tacos I’ve ever eaten, their taste was amazing.
After a good night’s sleep, the plan was to learn more about Mayan culture the next day and visit some of the oldest Mayan ruins still in existence.
But that day I didn’t have breakfast at the hotel, I was picked up a little earlier and we went to Cochinita Pibil, a very typical meal that is usually eaten before noon in the Yucatan. From there we drove south for about an hour and stopped at the first Mayan ruins.
Overall, I enjoyed this adventure and fitness vacation in Mexico. What was really cool about it was the fact that we combined the sightseeing + cultural knowledge and fitness parts. For example, we had a little race to find out who could climb the tallest pyramid fastest and I won.
You get a little bit of everything!
