Elahe Esmaili’s short film The Doll focuses on a family and community whose perspectives differ on a 14 year old’s marriage. This documentary will have its world premiere at the Oscar-qualified Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival 2021 and will also be shown at the Atlanta Film Festival 2021, another Oscar-qualified film festival.
After consulting his relatives, a 35-year-old father agrees to marry his 14-year-old daughter. In the case of people with different perspectives, his family grapples with the decision.
The director / writer / producer Elahe Esmaili is currently an MA student at the National Film and Television School (NFTS) and a BA graduate from the Art University of Tehran, where she won 1st place among more than 150,000 participants in the Iranian art competition (National University) since 2016 . Place occupied by entrance examination). She is also a member of the National Elites Foundation in Iran. Esmaili is very passionate about children’s and women’s rights. Issues such as child marriage, child abuse, neglect or violence by parents, rape, women versus women and social inequalities led her to direct her first short film, The Doll.
The doll was worked on by both Delaram Shemirani and Bahram Emran. Delaram began her career in 2015 as a short film editor and assistant editor in feature films. She was the first assistant editor of Saeed Roustayi’s Venetian nomination film Jst 6.5. Bahram began his career in 2015 as a short film editor and assistant editor of feature films. He was the editor of the Cannes-nominated short Lunch Time and was part of the editing department for many feature films, including Bomb, A Love Story by Peyman Maadi.
Cinematographer Emad Arad has worked on many Iranian short films. He was also the co-director of the short film Barter, which will premiere at the Huesca International Film Festival in 2021.
The doll will be shown at this year’s Academy Award-qualified Atlanta Film Festival from April 22 to May 2, from the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival from April 29 to May 2, and from June 11 to 19 at the Huesca International Film Festival and shown by the Norwegian Film Festival from June 9th to 13th.
