State (Remix) tells the story of an old man who, alone and abandoned by his only living relative, haunted by his role in changing the course of American history, prepares to commit suicide. His grandson, a young, traumatized veteran, is on the brink of memory and reality, trying to reach out to his estranged girlfriend who doesn’t know he’s back or has become AWOL. He seeks her out in a last-ditch effort, but at that point everything is a trigger.
Filmmaker Alain Nouvel started in New York City in 2009 as a set runner for an independent feature film called Finding Julia and as a video editor for companies like Warby Parker, Lenovo and Search Party Music. Alain got a job as assistant director to three-time Sundance Best Cinematography Award winner Ellen Kuras. He worked with her in this role for the next year. It inspired him to make State (Remix) his first feature film.
State (Remix) was recently featured on Hollywood.com on their main website and on their YouTube channel Hollywood Streams. On March 9th, Alain Nouvel spoke to a UCLA primary school class in public history where he shared his experiences in making the film and answered questions from students.
We asked Alain where he got the idea for the film from. He told us “State (Remix) started with an article about one of the darkest and most defining events in American history. A story developed about two characters: an old man and a young man. The old man is to blame for his involvement in this monumental event and succumbs to the burden decades later, while the veteran young man struggles to come to terms with his own trauma as he searches for his estranged girlfriend. Fear and despair can show up in unexpected ways. “
Alain also explained how his idea for the script developed. “The script was originally developed with the idea that our personal and shared stories are not always distinguishable. Allusions to the old man’s past, coupled with the pain of his lost family life, added to the intimacy and exacerbated the tragedy, while manifestations of the young man’s trauma suffered in active service elevated the story to a broader perspective on history . The parallel montage sequences bind the journeys of these characters. “
