I published a new one As part of Piece at The dropout last night. With the end of the first season of InvincibleSeemed like a good opportunity to take a look at what makes the superhero animated show so interesting.
Lots of discussion from Invincible has focused on the show’s violence, with many commentators arguing this Invincible is a deconstruction of classic superhero tropes. But what is noticeable? Invincible is what this violence hides. At the core, Invincible is a surprisingly serious and conventional superhero story, executed with a minimum of ironic distance and self-confident detachment. It’s not a deconstruction of the tropes of superhero storytelling, but a serious celebration of them.
