Artemis is the Greek goddess of the hunt, Forests, mountains and animals. She is depicted as a young girl with an archer’s bow and sometimes a crescent moon. The crescent moon is a symbol of her virginity and the fact that she is a young woman full of sparks and power.
Artemis’ Roman equivalent is Diana, who is mainly depicted with the crescent moon as a crown. The two goddesses have pretty much the same meaning. In this post we will focus on the Greek myth as Artemis is the name of the asteroid and not Diana. However, I chose to use the image of Roman Diana to illustrate this post because I just love it!
In Greek myth, Artemis specifically asked her father Zeus to preserve and protect her virginity, and her hunting companions were virgins too. Because of this, it is linked to protecting young girls.
Artemis was born the day before her twin brother Apollo and helped with his birth, hence she is also the goddess of midwives and childbirth. Her main role seems to be that of the protector of the innocent and the guardian of purity.
The asteroid Artemis 105 was discovered on September 16, 1868 at the Detroit Observatory by CJ Watson. It’s a fairly large (119 km) main belt asteroid and it takes 3.6 years to orbit the sun. It is very dark in color because it is mainly made of carbonaceous material.
Duality & contradictions
Artemis is rather contradicting; However, her duality is expected as she is a Gemini woman. Perhaps she is the shadow of the shining Apollo, her brother. We see the paradox in the fact that Artemis is the protector of animals, but also a hunter of animals. She is the goddess of childbirth but never has children. It protects young girls, but sometimes even brings them illness.
The duality continues as there are also two versions of the myth with Orion, her hunter companion. In one version; Orion bragged to Artemis during the hunt that he could take out any animal. Gaia, the earth goddess, sent a scorpion to stab him in the foot as punishment for his arrogance. Artemis was heartbroken and asked Zeus to make Orion a constellation.
In another version, it was Artemis herself that killed Orion, either by a scorpion sting or by one of their arrows. This was a punishment for attempting to rape them and pillaging their creatures. “The unfortunate Orion fell from the cruel Virgin [Artemis’] Wave and fill chaos now [the Air, which Orion fills as a constellation]. ”
Vengeful slip of a girl!
“Nemesis to Artemis” Which Orion is using violence against you again? The misery that touched your dress is still in the flanks of his mother, a lifeless corpse. When a man has lustful hands clutching your clothes, breed another scorpion to avenge your belt. ”
Artemis might just be a girl’s slip, but anyone who disregarded her chastity or took sacred creatures as trophies didn’t live long to brag about it. Hunters who struck the chest bled to death in agony, pierced by their arrows. Artemis is described as angry and vengeful when crossed, and this comes from a close association with the wild animals in their protection.
Artemis is often depicted with stags and stags, which were her favorite animals. The bear also plays an important role in their myth, and Artemis has properties similar to two important stars in Ursa Major, the great bear. The fixed star Dubhe is a calm female strength, but with a terrifying temperament when awakened.
Phecda has a real bloodlust and reflects Artemis’ piercing and bloody arrows. Hera turned Artemis ‘favorite companion Callisto into a bear as punishment for Zeus’ child, and that bear became the constellation Ursa Major.
Artemis Discovery Chart
After all the talk about bears, it’s not surprising that we find the sun in Artemis’ birth chart Alkaid in the big bear! It’s right on the tip of the tail like a deadly Scorpion stinger. Alkaid means “Employed mourners” The Ebertins have studied this star for centuries in secular astrological work and found that it actually caused grief and death.
“It will claim human lives in disasters like mine accidents, collapses of houses and bridges, landslides, earthquakes and weather-related disasters.”. The constellation as a whole should give “Calm, prudent, suspicious, suspicious, self-controlled, patient, but an uncomfortable spirit and great anger and vengeance when awakened.”
The characteristics of the Great Bear go very well with Artemis’ sheltered nature and explain her wild temperament. As an archer she is also skilled, patient and has great self-control. When she stalks, her passions will not overtake her. Her temperament is mainly aroused by defending the innocence of young girls.
I love Artemis’ natal chart. It looks like an archer’s bow! Mars / Uranus withdraw the arrow. Ceres is the arrowhead with Black Moon Lilith (medium version) which is symbolically interesting.
(I no longer consider BM Lilith an appropriate influence unless we use the real Lilith AND she is conjunct or opposite to the moon. See the Moon Food post.) Ceres can mean rape and abuse. (Ceres as Persephone was raped by Pluto.) Ceres is also a midwife. Ceres in the 8th house also references the possible abuse by Orion. The 8th house is the underworld of the map, the house of generation and death.
The wide Mars / Uranus conjunction can be asexual and prepubescent, just like Artemis’ eternal virginity. You are independent and enjoy solitude. Ceres is on Deneb Algedi “It is supposed to cause beneficence and destruction, sadness and happiness, and life and death.” In keeping with Artemis’ paradoxical nature, Ceres is one of the psychic and occult stars in Aquarius. Sadalsuud gives her great instincts and magical skills.
Mars is on Pollux In Gemini, Moon Artemis works well as the darker twin of the sunny Apollo. Mars on Pollux has the dubious reputation of a murderer or murderer, but it suits a slayer like Artemis. The north node is currently on Another Ursa Major Stern, bloodthirsty Phecda which I already mentioned, but actually closer to it Alfard in the water snake, associated with poisons (the scorpions sting again) and explains Artemis’ tendency to bitter vengeance.
The detection rate for asteroid Artemis is 5º Aries 41 ‘and it was discovered on the day of a new moon. The asteroid was across from this moon, fitting for a goddess associated with the growing crescent moon. She is fresh, new, excited and pure.
The Sabian symbol for Aries is 6 “A square brightly lit on one side” Some of the Linda Hills keywords that I think apply well to Artemis are “Illuminated solutions that offer ways out of tight situations. Having to build walls to protect and defend rather than dismantling barriers. Illuminate dark corners. “ A nod to Apollo there. Some of Lynda’s negative keywords also match “I feel trapped. Afraid of an ambush. Afraid of being attacked from behind. “
Artemis in astrology
If Artemis turns out to be prominent on a chart, the subject may find that they are perfectionists and are very picky about a sexual partner. They will maintain their dignity at all costs and will only give up their vigilance very slowly and after a lot of trust. Outwardly, they can appear puritanical, but when the ice has melted, they are anything but cold!
Remember, Artemis has a wild and untamed side, so virginity isn’t literal, she just doesn’t like it when her sexuality is possessed or controlled. Artemis loves to stalk, but she hates being stalked herself. With Artemis strong on the birth certificate, the passion is stimulated by the thrill of the hunt, but these people are often surprising and abruptly cool when the “Animal” should start chasing them.
Artemis can be very defensive, but she will always protect the innocent and has a special affinity for children, even if she never has one of her own. The subject will always hold the air of a teenager into his mature years.
Artemis people don’t like to get married, but they will never be lonely as they always attract a band of like-minded souls around them. You tend to travel with an entourage. A modern career for Artemis can be a paparazzi photographer or a filmmaker, where the famous become her prey and she photographs and cinematically capture them.
