How can you be so sure that these laws are strong enough to stop electoral fraud but weak enough not to create new barriers for communities that have had a hard time voting?
They’re not on the same field of play, they just aren’t.
When it comes to those expanded lines that happened in Georgia in the past – I’ve seen the news too – you have to look at the local officials to see what they did and what they didn’t do to prepare for people, who want to cast ballot papers. The only thing we have to acknowledge, and you have to be honest, you have seen an increase in black votes in our country over the past 15 years. And that’s a great thing – as a black person, I’m 100 percent behind it. However, it is the responsibility of local officials to ensure that they have the additional polling stations they need or that their equipment is in good working order. And I’ll tell you that Georgia or Florida law gives so much access to the ballot papers, way more than in New York state, way more than in Delaware state.
They shape these new measures as a way to restore confidence in the democratic process and system. But I don’t hear you say – or really a Republican – that you believe the former president influenced confidence in this system. Do you think his words have negatively affected confidence in the democratic system?
No, I will not do that. I think if you look at what the president was talking about, the president was talking about wanting to make sure the elections are safe. He talked about that more than anything.
I think we both know the former president said a lot more.
What did we talk about four years ago? About how the Russians are manipulating our elections, and that took two and a half years. I have no problem with these political debates. Let’s have it. That’s great. But all I’m saying is let’s – let’s get the whole story.
I asked about Trump’s influence on trust.
All That Matters: Is it easier for whites or blacks, rich, middle-income, or poor to cast ballots in the state of Georgia? And Florida? Yes or no? Is it easier? The answer is yes. Is it any less easy for them to cast the same ballot in Delaware or New York? The answer is yes.
Last question: do you see the former president’s rhetoric at least in the context of the events of January 6th, even if you do not see that they undermine confidence in the democratic system as a whole?
No, I will not do that.
