How are the seasons related to the zodiac signs? Once you know this, you can read your own horoscope by connecting to the seasons! You can do this once you understand the Hermetic principles of natural law. This guide will help you understand the basics of astrology.
All zodiac signs have seasons when they work optimally depending on where the sun is in their horoscope each month. In this article, I’m going to help you understand when these star season peak times might occur and what to do for the other two-thirds of the year!

Of course, most of the time we want maximum happiness and success. We are always asking astrologers. Is This Month Good For Aries? That is, give me love, money, fame, etc. In other cases we need to follow the wisdom of nature and just learn to let go of the constant desire.
In a linear world, it is very difficult to live cyclically. We are expected to work like machines and work around the clock. But nature and your horoscope are just not like that! It’s a cycle and planets spin. I have simplified the cycle into three words: REACH, RECEIVE & CHARGE! It’s easy to understand once you understand how the seasons, elements, and modes interact.
- The seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter)
- The 4 elements (air, fire, water, earth)
- The 3 modes (cardinal, fixed, changeable)
There are four seasons and three months in each season. Four main qualities form the basis of natural law. So we have HEAT, which causes DRY, which becomes COLD, and which creates HUMIDITY, which evaporates back into HEAT and so on.
So HEAT is active, Yang, male. COLD is passive, yin, feminine. MOISTURE blurs lines and binds. It creates harmony and empathy. DRY divides and divides. It defines and makes us individuals.
The Elements in astrology
- FIRE ~ Hot and dry. Resonates with the summer
- AIR ~ hot and wet. Resonates with spring
- WATER ~ cold and wet. Resonates with the winter
- EARTH ~ Cold and dry. Resonates with autumn
In this way the planets can also be classified.
- SUN ~ Extremely hot and dry.
- MOON ~ cold & wet.
- MERCURY ~ Tends to be dry, but mimics what it touches.
- VENUS ~ Cool and wet.
- MARS ~ Very hot and dry.
- CERES ~ cool and dry. (My interpretation)
- JUPITER ~ Hot and wet.
- SATURN ~ Extremely cold and dry.
- URANUS ~ Very hot and extremely dry. (Only extreme!)
- NEPTUNE ~ Very cold and wet.
- PLUTO ~ Hot and dry. (but difficult to define.)
The modes correspond to the changes in the season
- CARDINAL ~ start of the season. Action, Buds, and a Creative Boom.
- FIXED ~ The highlight of the season. Blossom. Small variation. Stable weather
- MUTABLE ~ flux, unpredictability. Endings and Beginnings. Ebb tide.
You can see these characteristics in signs, which are essentially seasons. Those born in these sectors are more like flowers that grow at a certain time of the year. You can clearly see the features and characteristics of the various signs of the zodiac.
So let’s go over all the signs next to the flowers that are associated with them. Hope they help you better understand the principles of tropical astrology. This is the system we use in the west where the seasons are extremely important to our wellbeing and survival.
THE ZODIAC SIGN AS FLOWERS
ARIES The thistle
Aries is cardinal fire. It’s hot and dry. Ruled by Mars. So this sign is the fastest, hottest, and fastest sign in the entire zodiac, and it’s the FIRST. The cardinal mode makes this sign impulsive and born to be a front line fighter. The thistle is prickly (Mars) and looks like a crown. Suitable for a confident leader.
BULL The thimble
Taurus is solid earth. It’s cold and dry. Ruled by Venus. (And I think Ceres, but that’s another story.) Cold is passive and drought is self-sufficient. The fixed mode makes this character very stable and receptive. Very zen! The thimble symbolizes creativity and intuition. It’s magical and ruffled (Venus) in appearance.
TWINS The lavender bush
Gemini are changeable air. It’s hot and wet. Ruled by Mercury. Moisture makes twins bond, and the heat makes them extroverted and flirtatious. The changeable mode makes this character customizable and unpredictable. Lavender gets EVERYWHERE once it’s established but finds it had to take root initially. Just like a twin, it points in many directions, you can smell it and its aroma lingers.
CANCER The White Rose
Cancer is cardinal water. It’s cold and wet. Ruled by the moon. Cold is passive, but the water element will cause this sign to reach and flow with others. Cardinal mode means that this character is not as soft and squishy as it seems. It has a protective cover and tough claws, do you remember? The white moon rose also has its thorns. Appearances can be deceiving.
LION The sunflower
Leo is solid fire. It’s hot and dry. Ruled by the sun. The flames of inspiration burn strong here while the dryness means Leo is a solo act. Creative and unique characteristics in fixed mode make for an invincible artistic king or queen. The dramatic sunflower with its oversized head sometimes has to watch out for its ego. But usually just loves to smile at the sun. (Or bask in the spotlight like a typical Leo diva!)
VIRGIN The buttercup
Virgo is changeable earth. It’s cold and dry. Ruled by Mercury. Cold leads to passive aggression (The Critic) and drought, and therefore requires hermit time after serving others. Its mutability means that it merges with others but can lose itself. Just like Virgo, the pretty little buttercup is harmless and blends in with its surroundings. Joyful and easy, BUT poisonous to animals. It is considered a harmful weed. Never cross a virgin.
LIBRA The red rose
Libra is Cardinal Air. It’s hot and wet. Ruled by Venus. The wetness means Libra needs relationships, while the heat means she is extroverted and sociable. Cardinal mode makes Libra someone people want to follow. The romantic red or pink rose is the flower of Libra. A dozen red roses are THE classic expression of love. A little shmaltzy maybe, but guaranteed to knock you off your feet. Yes. This is Libra.
SCORPIO The geranium
Scorpio is solid water. It’s cold and wet. It is passive in its reception and what is solid water besides ice? When the Scorpio ice melts, it still wants to DEEPLY connect with others. Fixed mode makes them extremely loyal. Dark red geraniums are the scorpion’s flower and have many facets. The Greeks named it after the crane bird. Like the Scorpio, it can come across as aloof. There are 400 types of geraniums. Unique and unfathomable.
SAGITTARIUS The carnation
Sagittarius is mutable fire. It’s hot and dry. The heat brings active creativity, while the dryness wants the freedom to be individual. Changeability means that it cannot stay still and is in constant flux. Carnations are a symbol of devotion and admiration. Sagittarius loves to worship, so can idolize partners. Carnations are said to have grown out of the tears of mourning of the Virgin Mary. Like Sagittarius, these flowers are bittersweet and religious.
CAPRICORN The African violet
Capricorn is cardinal earth. It’s cold and dry. Very wintry atmosphere here with passivity and separation. Cardinal earths carry the heavy burden of responsibility and it can be lonely at the top. The African violet is the flower of the ibex. Discreet and yet the velvety soft petals feel luxurious. This dainty, purple flower, like Capricorn’s parental traits, is associated with motherhood, virtue, and protection.
AQUARIUS The orchid
Aquarius is solid air. It’s hot and wet. The moisture makes it necessary to bond with others, and the heat makes it proactive and outgoing. Fixed mode brings a fixation on ideas, but is strangely resistant to change. The enigmatic orchid is the flower of Aquarius. This plant can’t help but stand out for its unique shape and funky colors. Its name is derived from the Greek “orchis”, which means testicle. Revolutionary Aquarius really has balls!
FISHES The water lily
Pisces is changeable water. It’s cold and wet. It is extremely passive and receptive and fits the changing flow perfectly. Wetness merges with others and merges with its surroundings. The water lily is the official flower for fish. Worldwide this flower is associated with spirituality. It stands for rebirth and peace, but also for simple joys. Like the water lily, fish can be the worst hedonist with no spiritual purpose!
AFFORD, RECEIVE AND RECHARGE
Back to my mantra ACHIEVE, RECEIVE and RECHARGE. You will see that each sign has its own biorhythm. What blooms in summer is dormant in winter. On the other hand, a winter shrub could feel pretty uncomfortable in summer.
Some plants need gallons of water a day, just like watermarks need to live near water in order to recharge. Others are mountain plants and thrive with different oxygen levels. We are all different plants! So no sign is bad, just as no season is bad. Nature needs the hibernation to ensure a good summer harvest.
So when you read your sun sign horoscopes:
- The ACHIEVE months should be when the sun is in your angular homes. 1,4,7 & 10
- The RECEPTION months should be when the sun is in your subsequent homes. 2, 5, 8 & 11
- RECHARGE month should be when the sun is in your Cadent Homes. 3, 6, 9 & 12
Cadent houses were viewed as somewhat degenerate by ancient astrologers as they were in decline. Square houses have always been considered the most vibrant, active, and successful.
So during the astrological year we should have the most energy when the sun is in these angular ACHIEVE signs, even though the sun technically squares our ascendant when it is in the 4th and 10th. However, squares purposely make us work hard. It is very difficult to let up during this time.
When the sun sets in our subsequent RECEIVE homes, we should receive the rewards for our efforts. We may need to network so that we are likely to be more sociable at this point. Receiving is essentially Venusian so this is a good time for our love life. We don’t have to be so proactive, things come to us, but only if we’ve worked hard in the success phase.
Why some people don’t like the Cadent Houses
When the sun sets in our cadent RECHARGE homes, it’s time to rest and regroup. This is the time when we may get sick with a disease if we have overdone it. It’s also a pretty karmic place where we have to repay all debts if we are lazy in the receiving phase.
For example, we didn’t work hard in the ACHIEVE phase, we didn’t receive anything in the RECEIVE phase, so we borrowed money at that point. Now we have to pay the piper! However, there are the high flyers who don’t take the time to rest during RECHARGE time, which is just as bad as slacking off in the ACHIEVE phase.
It is useful to run this cycle through the year as it reminds us when to take a break and when to put on our skates. Astrology is about finding balance. Astrology should be a map that tells you where you are, not a guide that tells you where to go. You have free will, so it’s entirely up to you.
SEASONS & THE HOROSCOPE CARD
There is a huge mountain (Saturn transit) on this map (i.e. your horoscope), but you are in a charging phase. You may not want to go into battle with Mars at the top of this mountain right now. Again, you have a choice of avoiding difficult encounters. But you can’t and shouldn’t avoid Saturn forever. It’s a great workout. So you choose a month when the sun is in your angular homes.
Of course there are seven other planets around your chart and each one will have a different focus. So it’s up to you to decide for yourself which months are best for these three behaviors. But as we look at the seasons, the sun will be the most obvious indicator of where we are energetically in the year. Therefore, horoscopes CAN be pretty accurate when read for our ancestors.

Why horoscopes give astrology a bad name
I wanted to write this article to show that there is some science behind astrology. Unfortunately, many newspaper horoscope columns simply make up things that give astrology a bad name. I decided to stop writing horoscopes because after a while you find that you are just repeating yourself.
It’s just too easy to write imaginative stories about the positions of the planets. While it’s entertaining, I don’t think it’s very educational. I want to make Darkstar Astrology more of a learning website and resource for you to learn the principles of astrology.
It is fascinating that every mineral, vegetable and animal on earth corresponds to the seven classical planets. In modern times we have lost the connection between astrology, alchemy, biology and chemistry.
I strive to delve deeper into the principles of Hermetism, which combine the Hermetic Arts of Astrology, Alchemy and Magic. At the same time, I want this information to be accessible to people with a horoscope reading level. We all started with horoscopes. As Chris Brennan, another traditional astrologer, put it, star pillars are the gateway drug. Welcome to the mushroom journey that is astrology!
