Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar and Nike split last year when the company was investigating allegations that the Brazilian player was making, according to a report by The. sexually abused one of his employees Wall Street Journal.
The Journal, citing people familiar with the events and documents reviewed by it, reported that the staff member told friends and colleagues that Neymar tried to force them to have oral sex with him in his hotel room while she was doing them Was in New York City for a Nike event in 2016, the employee filed a complaint in 2018, and in 2019 Nike hired an outside law firm to investigate the matter and ultimately decided to no longer include him in its marketing during the investigation.
Neymar and Nike’s 15-year relationship officially ended in 2020 when he later signed a deal with Puma. Nike did not give a reason for the separation at the time. The Journal reported that when he split up, he still had his marketing deal with Nike for eight years.
In a statement to the Journal, however, Nike said the split was due to Neymar not cooperating with the investigation following the alleged attack.
“Nike ended its relationship with the athlete because he refused to cooperate in good faith with the investigation of credible allegations of wrongdoing by an employee,” Nike’s general counsel Hilary Krane told the Journal.
A spokesman for Neymar denied the allegation was the reason for the split.
“Neymar Jr. will vigorously defend himself against these baseless attacks if claims are made, which has not yet been done,” the spokesman told the Journal, adding that the split was for commercial reasons.
A lawyer for the Nike employee did not respond to the journal’s request for comment.
Neymar faced a rape allegation in 2019, but was dismissed in August of that year for lack of evidence. The prosecutor was later charged with procedural fraud, defamatory denunciation and extortion.
