This week, Joe Biden wore an Omega Speedmaster for no apparent reason. On Saturday, the President strolled across the White House lawn to board Marine One for Camp David, and there it was on his wrist: the familiar black dial, the bezel full of numbers and lines (it’s a tachymeter and can used for distance measurement) for those who know what to look for) and suitcases with three pushers. That little act made Biden the first seated president to wear the Speedmaster, watch writer Nick Gould pointed out. That might not seem like a big deal when you consider that watch nerd Joe Biden has already made a few horological premieres for a POTUS: he was the first to wear an Apple Watch, and it’s not likely another president will either Seiko Chronograph owners often wear it. It is surprising, however, that no other president, given his place in American history, has worn a Speedmaster.
When the US kept John F. Kennedy’s promise to “go to the moon this decade and do the other things,” the astronauts on that mission wore Speedmasters. Neil Armstrong’s Omega Speedmaster is anchored in the Smithsonian. No other watch is so inextricably linked to American exceptionalism and yet it has escaped every president until 46. This probably won’t be the part of his legacy he’s most proud of, but Biden is already probably the best President there has ever been with watches to match his position. At least that is something! He first took office with a Rolex Datejust, which, thanks to Dwight Eisenhower, made history as the first Rolex ever to be worn by a President. Now he is finally bringing the Speedy to where it belongs. Also this week a whole series of big hitters: Drake, Ben Affleck, Tom Holland!
Joe Biden’s Omega Speedmaster
It sure feels like a long time for Omega. The watch has come close to an incumbent president before, especially in 1969 when the brand presented Richard Nixon with a gold version of the watch to commemorate the moon landing. However, Nixon declined the watch because of its value – US presidents are legally prohibited from accepting expensive gifts (the 2014 limit was $ 375). For Biden, who has owned this watch since at least fall 2017, that was obviously not a problem when he was wearing it during a shoot for InStyle.
Drake’s Rolex Datejust Pearlmaster
What can we say about Drake’s watch collection? The rapper doesn’t even bother repeating his ultra-valuable watches anymore. The latest piece to pull off his sleeve is this absolutely insane Rolex Pearlmaster. The gemstone set is also not something that is cooked on the aftermarket. No, he left the factory in those blue, green and yellow sapphires.
Tom Holland’s Tag Heuer Monaco Titan
Spider-Man is far from home. In Monaco, to be precise for the Grand Prix. His thematic outfit was just right: Monaco, Holland, wore the hot off the press Tag Heuer special edition named after the race. The outstanding square watch has been remade in titanium and has a sleek silver-black dial – check out this piece to find out more about the “standard Monaco in a tuxedo”.
Ben Afflecks Franck Muller Curvex
Affleck’s watch was the focus of a Watch World mystery this week. Was it the same watch Jennifer Lopez gave him in the “Jenny From the Block” video? And if so, who did it? The answers we now know are “yes” and Franck Muller. The Franck Muller Curvex is a fitting piece to evoke feelings of nostalgia of the late 90s / early 2000s. The brand’s highly intricate pieces, quirky designs, and distinctive barrel-shaped watches were a staple in the early years – think of them as the spiritual precursors of Richard Mille’s wacky creations. The brand was loved by celebrities, including apparently both members of Bennifer.
John Krasinski’s IWC Portofino
Promotion for a movie like that A quiet place part II requires a quiet watch – Krasinski knows that it is best not to attract too much attention, whether or not there are supersonic monsters afoot. The Portofino hits the mark: the simple white dial and the gold indexes of the watch are meant to do nothing but upgrade every outfit party to which it is invited. It was a smart choice for Krasinski as he bounced around the country and premiered his new film. All he needed was that one watch to pair with his quarter-zip polo shirts. Silk striped shirts, and tropical, leafy buttons.
