President Biden is due to have another discussion Friday with Senator Shelley Moore Capito, Republican of West Virginia, about his request for $ 1 trillion in spending on roads, bridges, broadband and more. Ms. Capito is the lead negotiator of a group of Republican Senators seeking a compromise with the President over the spending package.
The meeting takes place as the president hopes to take advantage of the positive monthly job report.
The two sides have closed the nearly $ 2 trillion gap, with Mr Biden dropping some of his demands in hopes of reaching a bipartisan settlement on at least part of his economic agenda. Republicans have signaled their willingness to increase overall spending slightly.
But compromises have so far been elusive as Mr Biden rejected Republican counter-proposals that included far less spending and no tax hikes for the corporate and wealthy. On Wednesday, during a meeting in the Oval Office with Ms. Capito, Mr. Biden again urged spending but also suggested introducing a minimum tax of 15 percent on businesses instead of increasing top tax rates.
The question of how to pay trillions of dollars in new expenditures – and whether those expenditures are necessary to create millions of new jobs in the years to come – will certainly be on the agenda during Mr Biden’s conversation with Ms Capito on Friday .
