“The Squad” went to war with its own party leader, Democratic House spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi, for rebuking MP Ilhan Omar for comparing the US and Israel with Hamas and the Taliban.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), One of the two Muslim women in the House of Representatives along with Omar (D-Mich.), Targeted Pelosi and other members of the democratic leadership, claiming “freedom of speech” does not exist for Muslim women in Congress . “
Tlaib’s comments follow after Pelosi and leaders released a statement blowing up Omar for her tweet that blew up America and Israel. We have witnessed unthinkable atrocities committed by the US, Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan and the Taliban. I asked @SecBlinken where people should turn for justice. “
Tlaib tweeted in response to the Democratic backlash against Omar: “There is no free speech for Muslim women in Congress. The benefit of the doubt does not exist for Muslim women in Congress. The Democratic leadership in the House of Representatives should be ashamed of their relentless, exclusive audio surveillance of colored congress women. “
Tensions between the leadership and “The Squad” became more apparent as the progressives support the Palestinians louder and louder despite the US’s long pro-Israel stance.
While Omar finally withdrew her comments after the Pelosi strike, she initially accused her critics of “harassment” and “Islamophobia”.
Pelosi, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), Majority Whip James E. Clyburn (DS.C.), Deputy Speaker Katherine Clark (D-Mass.), Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Caucus Vice Chairman Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) Said they would not support rhetoric comparing democracies to terrorist organizations and welcomed Omar’s return.
“Legitimate criticism of US and Israeli politics is protected by the values of free speech and democratic debate. Indeed, such criticism is essential to the strength and health of our democracies, “Democratic leaders said in a joint statement.
“But drawing false equivalences between democracies like the US and Israel and terrorist groups like Hamas and the Taliban fuels prejudice and undermines progress towards a future of peace and security for all. We welcome the clarification by Congressman Omar that there is no moral equality between the US and Israel and Hamas and the Taliban. “
While Omar retracted her original testimony, GOP lawmakers including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) And Jew Lee Zeldin (R-NY) have called on Democratic leaders to take formal action against Omar.
Zeldin even went so far as to say that the progressive arsonist should be removed as a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
