EXCLUSIVE: Gravitas Ventures has North American rights to it The murder of Kenneth Chamberlain, Screenwriter and director David Midell’s film about the police fatally shooting a 68-year-old black man in White Plains, NY, in 2011. Frankie Faison plays Chamberlain in the picture, which debuted at the 2019 Austin Film Festival, the Jury – and won audience awards. Gravitas will release the film every day on September 17th in cinemas and on demand.
The picture tells the story of the final hours in the life of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr., an elderly African American veteran with bipolar disorder, who was killed during a conflict with police officers who were sent to his home to be checked out after his medical warning device was activated by mistake. Although Chamberlain informed the officers that there was a mistake and he had no emergency, they were recorded mocking him, ridiculing his military service, and shouting racial labels at him. Finally, the officers broke open his door and shot him.
“Our goal has always been to ask important questions about how our criminal justice system treats people of color, people in low-income areas, and people with mental health problems. Midell and Enrico Natale of Redbird Entertainment are producers. Executive producers include Morgan Freeman, Lori McCreary, Gary Lucchesi, Sharad Chib, Chris Paladino, and Milan Chakraborty. Gravitas Ventures VP Acquisitions Tony Piantedosi negotiated the deal with Jonathan Deckter of Voltage Pictures.
