Warning: This story contains spoilers from Tuesday, June 15, Cruel summer Final.
Throughout the first season of Cruel summer, Lies have been told – by almost everyone on the show. However, the end of the first season revealed almost everything.
During her legal battle, Kate (Olivia Holt) was tried as a hostile witness. After claiming that Martin (Blake Lee) numbed her with a lemonade and woke up in his basement. Not only was Kate inconsolable when she found out her chat room friend’s identity, she was also mad at Jeanette (Chiara Auriela) for exposing such a private conversation.
Finally, Kate and Jeanette met face to face to discuss everything that had happened. Kate told Jeanette that she knew she had broken into on Christmas Eve 1993. Jeanette admitted this, but added that she never went to the basement – so if Kate knew she was there, she doesn’t have to have been in the basement either.
Kate then explained that she was home alone that night and called Jamie (Froy Gutierrez) while holding the snow globe. That was the breathy message on Jamie’s answering machine that he had Jeanette listen to. When Kate heard Jeanette come in, the audience knew she was hiding on the second floor. Jeanette finally took the snow globe and left, accidentally leaving her necklace behind. Kate then looked out the window and saw Jeanette’s bike; She knew it was hers because there was a playing card in the bike – the same bike Jeanette rode at the start of the season.
Kate admitted that she hadn’t seen Jeanette’s face so she had lied that she was “making eye contact”. However, when she heard her voice, found her necklace and saw her bike, she was convinced. When Kate mentioned that the bike had a map in it, Jeanette realized that Kate had definitely never seen her face – because that wasn’t her bike: it was Mallory’s (Harley Quinn Smith).
Mallory showed up at Jeanette’s house after following her home and called her a weirdo. Jeanette gave her the snow globe and threw it out of the house. It’s likely Mallory never returned the snow globe to protect Kate, Jeanette told her.
With that, Kate apologized to Jeanette, who asked her the truth about what had happened between her and Martin. She explained that before “things escalated to a really dark place” they went from real friends to more. She said there was a part she couldn’t remember so she wanted to go back to the basement to find out.
As she went down the stairs, she saw a pool of blood and remembered everything: Martin came down the day before the rescue and told her that the police had come and that it was only a matter of time before she came back. In his hand he held Annabelle, a weapon that had belonged to his father – the same weapon his father used to kill himself.
At first he put the gun to his head but couldn’t pull the trigger. He threw the gun on the floor and screamed before Kate picked it up and finally shot him. She stayed on the floor with him all night and called the police the next morning.
After Kate remembered everything, she shared everything with Jeanette – and told her to go through with the lawsuit and take her money. Jeanette, on the other hand, said it’s not about the money, it’s just about wanting that feeling – to feel popular, beautiful and enough.
After their conversation, Kate told the press that Jeanette had never seen her during her abduction and was also a “victim”.
Before the episode ends, Kate confronts Mallory about seeing her. Mallory stated that she never saw Kate’s face that night, but that she saw a blonde woman from behind.
“I saw a woman who lives free, not in the basement. I thought it was Martin Harris’ girlfriend or sister or something, ”said Mallory tearfully. “It didn’t make sense that a missing girl was in the living room talking on the phone. I never imagined it would be you in a million years. I didn’t think much of it until I saw your rescue on the news. Then the world just thought you’d ever be in the basement. To reveal my secret meant to reveal yours too. So I wrote it in such a way that it was none of my business and then we became friends. “
With that, Mallory said she was leaving town, but Kate didn’t want to and brought her to a hug. While best friends lived happy lives – and even kissed in the street! – Jeanette was free too. She went to the Marsha Bailey Show, dressed very much like Kate – headband and everything – and said she forgive Kate. She was finally in the spotlight the way she wanted it to be.
In the final moments, a flashback from 1994 revealed that Jeanette had broken into Martin’s house on another occasion as well. There she heard Kate in the basement calling: “Martin? Is someone there? If anyone can hear me, it’s Kate Wallis. Can you hear me? Martin locked me up here, please help me. Please help me. Is there anyone? “
Jeanette, with a smile on her face, did nothing.
